Mary LoRene Cahoon, age 90, of Layton, Utah, was called home to her Heavenly Father on April 23, 2026 surrounded by her family.
She was born in Greenville, Wayne County, Missouri on November 10, 1935 to George Washington Malloy and Viola Lorene Rainwater. Being the eldest child, she had an innate sense of nurturing and motherly influence to her four younger siblings. She was a woman of great strength, independence, kindness, devotion to her family, and disciple of Jesus Christ. As a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints she shared the gospel with many, and most importantly brought it to her family. Throughout the rest of her life she remained a faithful servant of her Savior by fulfilling many different positions in the church. The calling she considered most important was that of being a mother and raising her family, considering her children and grandchildren her greatest accomplishment.
LoRene married the love of her life, Alton Walch Cahoon, on February 16, 1954 in St. Louis, Missouri. They were later sealed for time and eternity in the Manti Utah Temple. Some of her most beloved hobbies included photography, writing poetry, traveling, reading, crocheting, but most of all spending time with her family. In addition, she made an emphasis on making her surroundings beautiful and her house feel like a home. The majority of her career was as a telephone operator, including 28 years for the Depart of Defense.
LoRene was always heard saying that she had the best family, including love and adoration for her in-laws and extended family. This was reciprocated because all that knew her loved her.
She is survived by her children Sandi (Tracy) Sampson, Lana (Sheldon) Adams, Brent (Kim) Cahoon; grandchildren Tyson Sampson, Darryn Sampson, Kellan Sampson, Brant Adams, Shana Tucker, Joshua Cahoon and Jordan Cahoon; twenty-two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; siblings Cari (Alan) Conner and Mike (Nancy) Stevens, as well as many other loved ones. She was preceded in death by her ex-husband Alton; parents George and Viola; siblings George "Bud" Malloy and Sallye Clark.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to all of the staff at Sunridge Assisted Living Layton and CNS Hospice Services. The staff who cared for her gave more than just physical assistance, but treated LoRene with love, extreme kindness and affection, and became an integral part of bringing joy in her last months of life.
