Mary was born on February 19, 1930 to George and Doris Abbott in Delta, Utah. She was an only girl in a family of boys, a fact of which she was very proud. She was raised along with her seven brothers on a farm in Sugarville (Delta) Utah.
Mary (Sis) was very close to her brothers, the hard work and sacrifices that were required to survive on the harsh desert created bonds that would last a lifetime. She would often say that “they had nothing,
But they had everything”. Throughout her life she often longed for the dirt roads of her beloved desert, where her best memories were made.
As a young adult Mary moved to Clearfield, Utah. She lived with her brother and sister-in-law and worked at HAFB as a secretary. Mary met and married a young Airman Billy Samuel Mills from South Carolina. Together they had four children, Mike, Milly, Laura, and William. They were later divorced and Billy died unexpectedly on September 5, 1972 at the age of 41.
Mary continued to work at HAFB where she met a wonderful man, Delbert (Robert) Layton. They became great friends and married on May 31, 1977. This union added Pam Layton Roberts daughter to the family.
They lived in a beautiful home in Layton that Robert built with the help of his brother Craig.
Robert passed away on March 26, 2019.
Mary loved to write and oil paint. She was a devoted life long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her faith was very important to her.
Mary stayed in her home for as possible after Robert died. She then moved to Sunridge Assisted Living at the age of 94, where she was living at the time of her passing.
Mary was preceded in death by; her parents, six brothers, husband Robert Layton, sons, Mike E. Mills and William L. Mills, son-in-law Ricky Maroney, and grandson Nicholas Brewer.
She is survived by; her brother Bill (Jeanine) Abbott, daughters, Milly Maroney, Laura (Kevin) Brewer and Pam (Joe) Mark. She also leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
A special thank you to the wonderful Staff at Sunridge who went above and beyond in trying to make Mary’s last days happy.
A private family graveside will be held.
Arrangements entrusted to Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah.
