Listen to Obituary

Mary Kaye Scott Rowlett, age 73, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 29, 2025, in Kaysville, Utah.

Mary was born on October 20, 1952, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Lloyd E. Scott and Marie Anna Hanson Scott. She was the youngest child and the only daughter, with three older brothers—Richard (Dick), Ronald L., and Michael L.—all of whom preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Rowlett; her children, Sara (Clint) McDonald, Briann (Richard) Derry, and Alexander (Dannaea) Lutz; and her grandchildren, Tynan (Madison) Portillo, Cohen Derry, Kipton Derry, Croix Derry, Jackson Lutz, and Mason Lutz.

Mary graduated from high school and attended some college, but the work she valued most was being a mother and grandmother. Caring for her family was the center of her life, and she gave herself to that role fully and selflessly.

In 1975 she married David Lutz in Sioux Falls and the following year they were baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her faith was deeply important to her, and she made sure her children knew how central the gospel was in her life. She especially cherished the belief in eternal families and the hope and comfort that belief brought to her throughout her life. Following her divorce from David J Lutz, Mary became a strong and devoted single parent, raising her children with resilience, determination, and love. In 2008 she remarried to Jerry Elvin Rowlett Jr in West Jordan, Utah.

Mary was loving, warm, helpful, and genuine. She had a great sense of humor, loved a good practical joke, and famously told each of her children and grandchildren that they were her “favorite.” She was creative, deeply selfless, and always willing to give of herself for others. Those who knew her will remember her kindness, her laughter, and the way she made people feel seen and loved.
