Mark Lynn Walton

Mark Lynn Walton passed away at the age of 85 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was a lifelong resident of Layton, Utah. He was born on November 28, 1940, in Salt Lake City to Orson Willis and Lucille Potter Walton.

Lynn grew up in his family’s orchards along Highway 89. As a young child, he survived a serious farm accident that required nearly a full-body cast, but through perseverance and determination, he recovered almost fully. He graduated from Davis High School and later attended the University of Utah.

He met his wife, Iris Kaye Blackner, at Davis High, and they were married on March 11, 1961, in Magna, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.

Lynn worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He worked in the family orchards, as a lineman for the Kaysville Power Company, and retired as a Civil Servant electrician after 26 years at Hill Air Force Base. He was affectionately known as “John Boy” to many of his coworkers and friends. Lynn also built much of the family home himself, expanding it as their family grew to include six children. Lynn loved country music and he was a devoted fan of Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, and Glen Campbell. He often reminisced about seeing Johnny Cash perform at Lagoon in Farmington. His son, Cory accompanied him to one of Johnny Cash’s final performances in Salt Lake City, where June Carter appeared on stage a few months before her passing.

When he wasn’t working, Lynn loved fishing, camping, and hiking. He enjoyed many backpacking trips with his brother-in-law, Gary Black, and their sons, including a special fishing trip to the Yukon backcountry by plane. He cherished his outdoor adventures and often shared stories of his close encounters with bears.

He greatly enjoyed traveling and took his children throughout the United States, visiting places such as Disneyland, SeaWorld, the Redwoods, and the California and Oregon coasts. They took many camping trips. trips to the Uintah’s and on his land in Paradise, Utah. He was also lucky enough to complete an around-the-world trip with his brother.

Closer to home, Lynn took pleasure in the simple things. He loved going out to eat with Iris and family, taking leisurely drives around town, and shopping. Known for his gentle heart and generous spirit, he was famous for handing out $2 bills to family and friends. He always had a butterscotch disc or Lifesaver mint on hand for anyone who needed something sweet.

Lynn is survived by his wife of 65 years, Iris; his children Cory, Debra (Brett Garner), Trisha (David Clark), Kevin (Maria), and Kyra (DJ Smith); and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Karen (Gary Black), Julie (Jim Hancock), and Linda Gallegos.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Lucille Walton, his brother, Willis Richard Walton; his son, Shane Kirt Walton; and his granddaughter, Angelyn Kaye Garner.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to all who knew and loved Lynn and are grateful for the outpouring of love and support. A special thank you is extended to the Valley View Ward and A PLUS Hospice for their compassionate care and assistance during his final days.

The funeral service will be held Friday February 20, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah. Family and friends may visit Thursday February 19 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary prior to the service.

Interment to follow at Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton.
