Mark Holland Smith

Mark Holland Smith, age 82, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026, in Bountiful, Utah. He was deeply loved and supported by many family members and friends.

Mark was born on November 16, 1943, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to John and Mary Smith. He spent his early life in South Ogden, Utah, where he enjoyed playing baseball as a boy and developed a lifelong interest in photography. He graduated from Bonneville High School and then served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mexico. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Weber State University.

Mark married his first wife, Jean, and together they began raising their family. He was later drafted into the United States Army and served during the Vietnam era. After returning home, Mark and Jean welcomed five children and focused on building a stable and loving home. While their family was growing, they lived in Ogden before settling in Clinton, Utah. Some of his children’s favorite memories from growing up include his familiar sighs and the well-known “no song,” small but unforgettable pieces of growing up with him.

During this time, Mark began building his professional life, starting his career as an auditor for the State of Utah and for financial institutions. In 1983, he made the decision to leave his position as a state bank examiner and form his own accounting and consulting firm. What began as audit work for small banks and credit unions evolved into specialized financial modeling and risk analysis for credit unions nationwide. Over the years, Mark developed tools and services focused on asset and liability management, interest rate risk, credit risk, and liquidity risk. His business ultimately served hundreds of credit unions in all 50 states and reflected his innovation, persistence, and deep understanding of the industry.

Later in life, Mark met his dear wife, Martie. As their relationship grew, Mark invited Martie to join him for Thanksgiving at his son’s home in Seattle. During the long drive, they talked about everything, including marriage, and quickly realized the depth of their connection. Mark and Martie were married in a civil ceremony in March of 1999. A few years later, they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Jordan River Temple.

In his later years, Mark fulfilled a lifelong dream of earning his pilot’s license and flying his own Cessna, something he truly loved. He also had a passion for travel, visiting nearly every state in the country as well as many other countries and continents. Whether exploring by plane, by road, or behind the wheel of one of his favorite fast cars-especially his Corvette and Charger-Mark found joy in the freedom of the journey. These adventures, both in the air and on the ground, were among the many joys of his later life.

Mark is survived by his wife, Martie; five children and five stepchildren, along with their spouses; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister; his brother and sister-in-law; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Cooper.

The family would like to thank Legacy House of Bountiful as well as Inspiration Hospice for their compassionate care and support during his final days.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. The skies he loved now welcome him home.

Funeral services will be held Friday January 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Oak Hills Ward, 1410 E. Gentile St., Layton, Utah. Family and friends may visit Thursday January 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah, and Friday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Kaysville City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Intermountain Healthcare Foundation Cancer Services, in memory of Mark Smith.
