Lt. Col. Jack F. Pierce (Ret.) died Saturday, May 19, 2007 in Des Moines, Iowa while attending a reunion of the 113th Cavalry Recon Squadron (Red Horse).

He was born July 6, 1921 in Twin Falls, Idaho, the son of Cliff Pierce and Hester E. Schurr.

Jack graduated from Twin Falls High School in 1939 and attended the University of Idaho. He joined the U.S. Navy and later the U.S. Army, serving in the 113th Recon Squadron in Germany during World War II. After returning from the war, he began working for the U.S. Forest Service, retiring in 1976. He continued his military service by serving in the National Guard and Army Reserves. He returned to active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1961 and was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas. He retired from the Army in 1973.

Jack married Shirley A. Richardson in Boise, Idaho on October 17, 1942. They have three children. During his time with the Forest Service they moved often, living in Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Texas, Colorado and California. After retirement, Jack became interested in politics and was elected to the Roy City Council. After serving on the Council for a time, he successfully ran for mayor of Roy, Utah being elected in 1982. They eventually "sold their lawn mower" and moved to Cottonwood, Arizona.

Jack was also a member of the Elks for 63 years and was a Past Exalted Ruler of BPOE # 1680 in Burns, Oregon. He also worked with the Elks Lodge in Roy as their ritual coach for many years. He was a member of the Masons, Scottish Rite, and Shrine. Jack was a life member and Past Commander of the VFW in Cottonwood and was proud to be acting Commander of the Post Honor Guard. He was a Past Commander of the American Legion, a member and Past Worthy Patron of Eastern Star and Past Associate Guardian of Jobs Daughters.

Jack is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Jeanne (Steve) Sanchez, of Hooper; sons, Ben (Sharla) Pierce, of Lakewood, CO; and Jim (Roxanne) Pierce, of Roy; grandchildren, Michael (Diane) Dauby, Lori (Michael) Dooley, Chris Pierce, Heather (Jake) Tafoya, Andrea Pierce, Curtis Pierce, Tom Sylvester; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Brian Andersen.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 26th at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South.

Friends and family may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Lindquist''s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
