Listen to Obituary

LoyDeen Hess Howell, 85, of Farmington, Utah, passed away unexpectedly at home in the early morning hours of February 2, 2026.

LoyDeen was born April 22, 1940, in Farmington, Utah, to George Lloyd Hess and Sarah Ruth Turner Hess. She was raised in Farmington and graduated from Davis High School in 1958. She met her future husband, Richard Melville Howell, while they were both working at Lagoon Amusement Park. They were later married on February 6, 1959, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together, they raised their family in Farmington.

She is survived by her children, Julie Howell, Janet Lamping (Doug), and Carol Hammerstrom; her two grandchildren, Sarah Hammerstrom and Nikkolus Hammerstrom; many nieces and nephews; and by many others who lovingly called her “Grandma Deen,” as she became an additional grandma to countless friends and neighbors through the years.

LoyDeen dedicated many years to both her family and her community. She first devoted herself to being a full-time mother, creating a warm and loving home for her family. She later worked within the Davis School District as a head cook at several schools and then served for over 20 years as a Special Education teacher’s assistant, enriching the lives of many students through her patience and kindness.

LoyDeen faithfully served in many callings within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout her life, most recently as a Resource Center Specialist, where she became affectionately known as the ward’s “candy lady,” bringing smiles to many through her generosity.

She found great joy in caring for others, often expressing her love through cooking and baking. She spent countless hours crocheting hats, blankets, scarves, and dishcloths for donation to the LDS Humanitarian Center, enjoyed cross-stitching, and treasured time spent with family and friends at the family cabin at Bear Lake, where many cherished memories were made.

LoyDeen was preceded in death by her parents, George Lloyd Hess and Sarah Ruth Turner Hess; her husband, Richard Melville Howell; her sisters and their husbands, Charlene and Bob Rampton, LaDell and Harold Manning, and Joyce and Verl Buhler; sisters-in-law Marcia Knight and Helen Strong; brother-in-law Lynn Howell; and her parents-in-law, Frank and Maxine Howell.

A viewing will be held on Friday, February 13, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at The Rock Church, 272 North Main St., Farmington, Utah 84025, with funeral services following at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at the Farmington City Cemetery.
