Leslie Grant James, born on October 8, 1946, in Gunnison, Utah, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2025, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was 79 years old.

Leslie’s life was marked by dedication—to his family, his faith, and his craft. Raised in Utah, he pursued higher education at Snow College before embarking on a lifelong career in the autobody industry. His passion for working with his hands and understanding the mechanics of machines led him not only to excel in autobody repair but also to share his knowledge as an instructor in Utah and Colorado. In the classroom, Leslie became affectionately known as “Papa Smurf,” a nickname given by his students for his signature blue jumpsuit and full beard that mirrored the beloved cartoon character. It was a title he wore with pride, reflecting both his approachable nature and the respect he earned from those he mentored.

Outside of work, Leslie found joy in simple yet meaningful pursuits. He had a deep love for working on cars and could often be found tinkering with anything that had a motor. His green thumb was evident in the gardens he tended with care—gardens that no doubt reflected the same patience and attention to detail he brought to every aspect of his life.

A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Leslie lived his faith through service. He cherished the connections he made within his church community and took great satisfaction in getting to know those he served alongside.

Family was central to Leslie’s life. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Shanna; sons Shane (Betsy), Kenneth (Charity), and Tyler (Carlynn); daughter Misty (Michael); brothers Larry and Carl; and sisters Linda and Mary. He held a special place in his heart for his 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, who knew him simply as “Papa”—a name that captured both his warmth and enduring presence in their lives that was reinforced by the strong and long hugs he provided everyone.

He now reunites with loved ones who preceded him in death: his brother Kenneth, father Ovell, and mother Nelda.

Leslie Grant James leaves behind a legacy of hard work, quiet strength, and heartfelt service. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. Funeral services will be held on December 29, 2025, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at Bountiful 16th Ward 720 E 550 N. A viewing will be from 9-9:45 prior to services.
