Leona C. Pettigrew

May 1, 1926 ~ October 19, 2022

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend, and our everything, Leona C. Pettigrew passed from her earthly life October 19, 2022 at the age of 96.

Leona was born May 1, 1926 in Lehi, Utah to Lester Benjamin and Erma Dean Peterson College. She was one of 12 children and the youngest girl. She was raised in Lehi on the family farm working alongside of her parents, siblings, and grandparents, leaving a legacy of hard work.

She was an athlete throughout her school years receiving The Condor Award for the best female athlete in 1944, her senior year. At the age of 19 she moved to Ogden, Utah and worked at Utah Depot. At that time, they were forming all girls’ softball and basketball teams and she along with her sister Bessie played for The Utah Depot All Girls Basketball and Softball Team traveling to other military installations to playball. The highlight of the six years she played was her trip to Hawaii in 1949. She formed many lifelong friends from the team that was later known as The Ogden Shamrocks.

Leona met the love of her life, Robert “Bob” H. Pettigrew, and after a whirlwind romance of six weeks they were married in Elko, NV on June 28, 1951. Leona lost Bob in 1974 and lost a little piece of her heart. After mom lost dad, her family was her main focus. She rarely missed a sporting event, school program, road trip, school shopping or playing Santa to her grandkids and great-grandkids, nieces, nephews, and many others. She was known fondly as Mama Leona, Aunt Leona, and Grandma Grew.

She was a tenacious woman with never ending energy. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her most Christ like attributes were her compassion for others and her unconditional love, and showing us how to handle the trials we have in this life. She was our matriarch, our rock, our best friend and the kindest person there was. Our lives are eternally blessed because of her.

Leona is survived by her daughters, Debee (Mike) Combe and Paula (Bob) Hensley; and grandchildren, Jerred (Krista) Combe, Jenney (Tavin) Rose, Natalie (Dave) Nye, and Heidi (Reed) Tingey. She is also survived by her greats, Korlee, Tavin, Kenley, Lane, Austin, Taylor, Blaklee, Jackson, Brooks, and Tanner; her great-greats, Rhenson and Nova; and her second family the Durrants. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, all of her siblings and her friends. She is the last of a great generation.
