Layne Scott Williams

May 13, 1951 — January 27, 2024

In loving memory of Layne Scott Williams, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Layne passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack following surgery on January 27, 2024.

Layne was born May 13, 1951 on Mother's Day in Ogden, Utah to Carl and Paula Williams. He was the oldest of 14 children, a role he proudly carried throughout his life. He cherished his roots on Valley View Drive, surrounded by his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He attended school at Davis High, where he met his sweetheart, Karen Gailey. They were married on June 15, 1971 and built a beautiful life together in Layton. They raised their four children in the home Layne built for their family.

Layne worked several jobs including Clover Club and Bach Brothers before following in his Dad’s footsteps and becoming a very talented carpenter. His career as a carpenter and later as a General Contractor showcased his love and dedication to true craftsmanship. He was blessed to work many years side by side with his Dad and brothers as Carl Williams & Sons Construction. Later in his career his expertise led him to a role as a construction loan building inspector for Barnes Bank.

Beyond his professional life, Layne enjoyed snowmobiling, working on cars with his brothers and son, and golfing with his brother in law. He always had a project he was working on around the house or in his shop. Retirement brought a new passion for genealogy and a morning routine of a cup of coffee and research. Family traditions, especially the annual Bear Lake camping trip, held a special place in his heart.

Above all else, being a grandpa was his greatest joy in life. With Papa there were long shoulder rides outside, building racetracks with 2x4s, marble runs with PVC pipes, and lots and lots of snacks.

Layne’s selflessness, exemplified by his willingness to help anyone, left a lasting impact on those who knew him. He will be dearly missed, but his legacy of love, hard work, and compassion will live on forever.

Layne is survived by his wife of 52 years, Karen Gailey Williams; children: Brandon Scott Williams, Alesha (Cory) McKinlay, Jamie (Steph) Garcia, Karley (Jeremy) Checketts; grandkids: Madison, Mikayla, Tucker, Bridger, Cooper, Brenna, Henry, Augustus, Finnegan and Maxwell and great grandsons, Madden and Payne,  his siblings: Shelley (Les), Jackie, Tom (Sherrie), Cal (Kathy), Leesa, Kathy, Wendy (Robert), Carrie (Kirt), Wes (Stefanie), and Ryan; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Paula; his brothers Doug, Paul and Clay.

We love you Dad, Grandpa, Papa, Pop. Thank you for being you.

In lieu of flowers, spread kindness and go out of your way to help someone, in Layne’s memory.
