Lash Hymas Laker

Lash Hymas Laker, 85, passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the George E. Wahlen Veteran''s Home. He was born on April 21, 1927, the third child of Joseph Henry and Bertha Hymas Laker, in St. Charles, Idaho.

He married his sweetheart, Virginia Madsen, on March 30, 1945 in the Logan LDS Temple. They were married nearly 62 years before her death on January 4, 2007.

Lash joined the Navy near the end of WWII, then attended Ricks College and Utah State University where he received his commission in the US Air Force. He earned his Master''s Degree in Counseling from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, while he was teaching ROTC. He attended flight training in Florida and his assignments took him all over the United States and to Germany and Bermuda before he separated from the Air Force. He never lost his love for flying and on his 80th birthday, flew an F-16 flight simulator at Hill Air Force Base for his celebration.

He also was a businessman, owning Dahnken of Ogden for several years before becoming partners in two Dahnken stores in San Diego. In 1986, Lash and Virginia moved back to Ogden, and he worked at Zales Jewelry until his retirement.

Lash loved music and played the harmonica. The family passed the hours singing in the car as they drove cross-country to his many assignments. He also loved to read and fish.

He and Virginia were temple workers at the Los Angeles LDS Temple, driving from San Diego each weekend for a year. After moving to Utah, they returned to California to serve a mission at the Los Angeles Family History Center. Lash also served a mission at the Ogden Cannery and was a temple worker at the Ogden LDS Temple.

Lash and Virginia are the parents of two children, Lauralee (Kent) Gardner, South Ogden and Stephen (Camille) Laker, Ogden. He is survived by seven grandsons, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Dee Lyons, Lehi, Utah.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Paul Gardner; his brother, Grant; and his sisters, Della and Ruth.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Bloomington Cemetery in Idaho.
