Larry Vaughn

Larry Kent Vaughn was born December 3, 1934, and passed away January 26, 2026, due to the effects of advanced age. He was the eldest child of Dorothy Mary Wheelwright and George Ellis Vaughn. Larry was born in the old Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah.

In 1946, his father moved the family to Nyssa, Oregon where Larry graduated from High School. He fished and hunted waterfowl and game birds with his dad and joined the Boy Scouts, which wonderfully broadened his world when he traveled to the 1950 Jamboree in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. He also began to develop artistic talents at school.

Larry married June Louise Peterson in the Idaho Falls Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on August 24, 1956. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1957 just before their first son was born. An executive career with the Boy Scouts of America seemed more reliable than pursuing artistic endeavors. His first job was in Idaho Falls with the Teton Peaks Council. Their second son was born in Idaho Falls in December 1959.

Then there was a major move to the Seattle area where Larry served the Northlakes and Cascade Districts, and later, as a Field Director of the Chief Seattle Council. In 1966, the little girl they had been longing for came into the family. In 1974, Larry became the Scout Executive in the Jim Bridger Council serving southwestern Wyoming and corners of Utah. He then served as Scout Executive in the Tendoy Area Council based in Pocatello, Idaho. Later, he worked in the Western Region with offices in Phoenix, Arizona where he guided Councils in Southern California and directed fund-raising for the Region.

Larry’s art followed his career. In his limited spare time, he produced oil, acrylic, and watercolors of the beautiful scenery of the West, much of it connected to the adventurous locations of Scouting. He gave his paintings to many family members and friends, he sold a few others, and he reproduced many on Christmas cards, and all reminded us of the places that he loved and that we shared together as a family. Larry was active in the LDS Church from his youth forward serving in many callings, especially with the youth because of his Scouting career. He faced life’s challenges and addressed them in the best way he knew how. He was successful in providing for his family and establishing his children well in life for which they love and appreciate him.

Larry is survived by three children: Grant (Linda) Centerville, UT, Keith (Lisa) Preston, ID, and Sabra Ann (Brent Collins) Cascade, ID; 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; two sisters, Carolyn Cleverly of Craig, Colorado, and Kathleen Nielsen Hughes of Santa Clara, Utah; and one brother David Vaughn of St. George, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, June, a grandson, Tyler Collins, and a stillborn great-grandchild.

Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday January 29, 2026 from 6-8 pm at Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N. 400 E. A private family graveside service will be held Friday January 30th at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Caldwell, Idaho.
