Lanny Burnell Holbrook

May 4, 1941 — March 26, 2023

Syracuse

On Sunday, March 26, 2023, the most wonderful man, Lanny Burnell Holbrook, passed away at his home due to complications of diabetes, at the age of 81.

Lanny was born on May 4, 1941, to Joseph E. Holbrook and Mildred Burton in Ogden, Utah. He grew up in Syracuse, where he lived in the same square mile his entire life. Lanny graduated from Davis High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Weber State College.

As a young man he worked hard, saved his money, and purchased a 30-acre farm where he raised crops such as hay and corn. He made the best decision to marry JoAnn Musulas, the woman of his dreams, after finding out she raised baby ducks in her bathtub. Together they raised five children, and had a small farm with cows, pigs, turkeys, ponies, and ducks.

Along with being a farmer, Lanny worked at Hill Field and the Defense Depot as a computer programmer. He also was quite popular in Syracuse being a ditch master, a tree trimmer, and an income tax preparer. He loved doing service for others and was a member of the Syracuse Lion’s Club and Syracuse Museum Committee. Everyone would see Lanny in his famous bib overalls around the town moving and cleaning up weeds, helping the widows with their yards, or clearing snow so that the kids could walk on the sidewalks to school.

Lanny Holbrook was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a church mission in the Detroit, Michigan area and went on to serve in many other callings in the church such as finance clerk and counselor in the bishopric. Lanny was sealed to his wife in the Logan City Temple and loved the church and serving his fellow ward members and neighbors.

Lanny played his favorite sport, baseball, throughout his life, playing for Weber State College, and continued playing well into his 70’s alongside his best friend, Ron Hamblin. Lanny and Ron were like brothers, and with their wives, JoAnn and Rochelle, started a lifelong tradition of a yearly family camping trip that has been going on for over 50 years. Lanny was an avid fisherman and loved being in the mountains, looking forward to that family camping trip with the Hamblin’s every year, and would choose that trip over any other vacation in the world.

Lanny is survived by his loving wife, JoAnn; his children and their spouses, Rob (Darla) Holbrook, Jill (Brad) Griffeth, Wendy (Lance) Garner, Josh (Fawn) Holbrook, Annie (Casey) Merrill; his grandchildren, Brindee, Mylee, Macee, Kassidy, Kilie, Kenzie, Kaybree, Hunter, Morgan, Sawyer, Ellie, Dax, and Jace; and his sister, Janet (Kemp) Sanders. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Ellis Holbrook and Mildred Burton Holbrook; brothers, Joseph Val Holbrook and Larry Brent Holbrook.

Funeral services will be held 11:00am on Monday, April 3, 2023, at the Cherry Village Chapel, 2339 West 1900 South, Syracuse, Utah 84075. Friends and relatives may visit the family on Sunday, April 2, 2023 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the Lindquist’s Syracuse Mortuary, 869 South 2000 West, Syracuse, Utah, and on Monday morning from 9:30 to 10:30am at the church.
