Kent Omni Porter, 69, a resident of Layton, Utah, passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2024, after a six-year battle with prostate cancer.
Kent was born in Ogden, Utah, on February 5, 1955, to Roger L Porter and Gwenda Cragun (Meyer). He was a graduate of both Ogden High and Weber State College. He served for three years in the US Navy as a cryptologist and his service included assignments aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation and at the Adak Naval Air Station in Adak, Alaska.
Kent married Jean Hansen in 1979. They had five children. Kent spent his career as an electronic engineering technician for Evans and Southerland in Salt Lake City where he worked on aircraft simulator technology and frequently joked that they paid him to have fun. He retired in 2019 after 39 years with the company.
He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and especially enjoyed spending time camping and hiking in the Uintah mountains in his youth and in Death Valley, CA in more recent years. He also loved spending time with his family fishing, inventing, and attending tournaments. He loved his cats and was famous for growing the best tomatoes at his home in Layton. He was brilliant and a creative whiz at building electronic projects. Kent had integrity and was honest to a fault. He was patient, tenacious, brave, and kind. Even as he battled cancer, he continued to show up. His mild manner and dry sense of humor will forever be missed.
Kent is survived by his five children, Richard (Shauna) Porter, Robert (Sarah) Porter, Randall (Jun) Porter, Lisa Porter, and Faye (Benson Haglund) Porter and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Gwenda Meyer and four siblings Sandra Ward, Gary Porter, Nancy (Craig) Stagg, and Dennis (Gwyn) Porter; four stepsiblings, Vicki (Dave) Berrett, Margo (Jerry) Culwell, Brent (Pat) Meyer, and Ron (Jean) Meyer; and by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Kent was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, Jean Porter, who passed away in 2010, his grandson, Jaden Porter; and by his father, Roger L Porter.
