Kenneth Lamont Hunter

October 27, 1942 — April 3, 2023

It is with sad smiles that we bid farewell to our husband, father, and grandfather, Kenneth Lamont (Monty) Hunter, who slipped from this life to the next on April 3, 2023, at the age of 80 years. He was surrounded by family and friends, who came to see him off and wish him well.

Monty was born October 27, 1942, in Twin Falls, ID to Miles Arthur Hunter and Bernice Fackrell Smith Hunter. He spent part of his childhood in Provo, UT, but then in 1952 moved with his family to Casper, WY, where he became a Wyoming cowboy (and he made sure his children and grandchildren understood this important part of their heritage).

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Brenda Joyce Phillips Hunter and their 11 living children and 27 grandchildren (many of who call him Pop): Pam Hunter (former spouse: Steven) and their children Maya, Avery, Ian, and Haven Hunter-Holmes of Chesapeake, VA, Brad Hunter (spouse: Danielle) and their children Leah, Claire, Emery, and Olivia of Trophy Club, TX, Heidi Hunter and her daughter Maddy of Roanoke, TX, Karen Simmons (spouse: Paul) and their children Calvin (spouse: Emily), Rebekah, Laurel, and Timothy of Cabot, AR, Julie Bangerter (spouse: Brian) and their children Hunter (fiancé: Josie), Tyler (spouse: Aspen), Caitlin, and Lexi of Layton, UT, Debbie Hart (spouse: Trent) and their children Robin, Miles, Molly, and Trent of Sante Fe, NM, Jeff Hunter (spouse: Bethany) and their children Ella, Atticus, Emerson, and Mathilda of Rio Rancho, NM, Steve Hunter of Albuquerque, NM, Matt Hunter of Albuquerque, NM, Brian Hunter (partner: Theresa) of Dallas, TX, and Jenny Hunter (partner: Brad) and her children Marley and Liam Moreira of Bountiful, UT. He is also survived by his brother, Randy and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son, William Hunter, his brother, Michael Hunter, and his parents.

Monty led an exciting life in his career as an employee of the Central Intelligence Agency (cue the James Bond theme) and was relieved he could retire in overt status so he could share some of his thrilling exploits with the rest of us. His job opportunities took him across the U.S. and around the world, providing him with an appreciation for other cultures.

He served in various capacities throughout his life in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including serving a mission in Southern Germany/Italy (1962-1965) and also served a mission with his eternal companion to Raleigh, NC (2011-13) where they served in the South Boston, VA branch in which Brenda grew up. He enjoyed sharing his testimony of the Gospel with his children and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held April 8, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 125 Chapel St, Layton, Utah, 84041. The viewing will begin at 12:30 pm, with the funeral following at 2:00 pm. Interment will immediately follow the funeral at the Lindquist Cemetery, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah, 84041.
