Kathryn Elison Horne Carling passed away peacefully surrounded by family of complications resulting from a stroke at the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, ID on March 23, 2024. She was 82 years old.
Kathy was born on June 1, 1941, in Salt Lake City, UT to George Dale Elison and Afton King Bennett Elison, the oldest of 4 children. Kathy grew up in Kaysville, UT and graduated from Davis High School, the same high school from which her mother graduated, 5 of her children graduated and 3 of her grandchildren graduated.
Kathy met David Christian Horne, in Kaysville, UT where they were married on August 14, 1958. They had 6 children: James David Horne, Joel Christian Horne, Bennett Dale Horne, Linda Horne Hetman, Roger Owen Horne, and Periann Horne Matagi. Their marriage ended by divorce in 1992.
She lived in Kaysville, UT until her second child was born, at which point the family relocated to Boise, ID for 7 years where 3 more children were added, then to Scottsdale, AZ for 9 years where the youngest daughter was born, and finally “back home” to Fruit Heights, UT. Later in life she moved to Ammon, ID to be closer to her youngest daughter, Periann.
Mom lived a life of faith and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served her church in several capacities throughout her life, including twice as Relief Society President. She was known for her compassionate service and used to say, “It’s nice to be important; but it’s more important to be nice.” That is how she lived her life. Her unconditional love and kindness were examples to all who knew her. The greatest joy in mom’s life was her family. She loved being a mom, grandma, sister, aunt, and friend to all. Her loving, funny and compassionate nature drew everyone to her home and brought great happiness to her.
Upon finding herself a single “empty nester”, she chose to serve a full-time proselytizing mission for her church in 1993. She was called to the Oregon, Eugene mission where she served faithfully for 18 months.
After returning from her full-time mission, she met Lee Astle Carling of Plain City, UT at a church single adult activity. They both loved to square dance and immediately fell for each other. They were married on June 19, 1999. Lee brought 2 daughters (Nancy Carling Shaw and Connie Carling Hurd), 2 sons-in-law, and 5 grandchildren to the family.
Mom will be missed by her family, friends, and Zoey (her dog who she adored). She leaves a legacy of love, service, compassion, and kindness.
She is survived by Lee, her husband of 24 years, her 6 children, their spouses (Lynne, Shauna, Kathy, Jim, Tiffani, and Dave), Laura Tidwell, Gary Vigil, Todd Sakai, 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 7 step grandchildren, 9 step great-grandchildren, her sister Yvonne Elison Brown, and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her only brother (Stanley Dale Elison), and her youngest sister (Pamela Elison Reeves).
The family would like to thank the loving staff and friends at Parkwood Meadows Assisted Living of Ammon, ID where Lee and Kathy lived for approximately 3 ½ years. We also appreciate and thank the skilled and compassionate doctors, nurses, and aides at Symbii Home Health and Hospice and Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, all of whom provided invaluable service in her final days.
We would like to extend a very special thank you to our sister, Periann Matagi for her countless hours of care and attention to mom, especially over the past 3 ½ years since mom and Lee moved to Ammon. Periann and her family welcomed mom and Zoey into their home in her final weeks, a gesture we know our mom appreciated greatly.
