Karen Shupe Oates

Our beloved Karen Shupe Oates, age 89, of Harrisville, passed away August 28,2023 surrounded by her loving children. Karen was born March 1,1934 to James Wright Shupe and Myrtle Bybee Shupe at the Dee Hospital located in Ogden, UT. May 10,1986 she married the love of her life, Frederick W. Oates. They were later sealed in the London England Temple.

Karen attended Weber High School where she played French Horn in the high school band. She studied Voice at BYU where she sang as a soloist. She was a Professional Ballroom Dancer and Teacher, which led her to travel all over and compete in numerous competitions. She was a member of ITC (International Toastmasters Club) serving as President and Vice President. For 30 years she was member of the MODRATONES, a double trio singing group.

After 30 years of service in the Federal Government, she worked in the school lunch program at Wahlquist Jr High along with being a Bridal Consultant. She managed the Harrisville and Plain City Senior Center, a position she loved dearly for 15 years.

Karen is survived by her greatest accomplishment, her children the Fab Five; Michael Ward, Ogden; Ray (Eva) Ward, North Ogden; Ivan (Linda) Ward, Clinton; Rochelle (Douglas) Owens, Harrisville; Ellen Ward (Farrell); Layton; Step Children; Carol Onishi, Brigham City; Gloria Jean(Bob) Gilbert, Roy; Luana Sant, Roy; Sylvia Oates, Ogden; 26 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren with 1 more on the way; 4 great-great grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband Frederick Oates, sister Gloria Eager, brother James Wright Shupe Jr, grandson Cory Owens, great-grandson Colton Poulson.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Lindquist’s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 North Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 from 6:00-8:00pm and Wednesday, September 6, 2023, from 12:45-1:45pm. Interment, Ben Lomond Cemetery, North Ogden.
