Judith Matz passed away April 30, 2026, surrounded by loving family. She was born in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, England and immigrated to the United States in 1966. She was preceded in death by her husbands, David Matz, Leonard Gans, Brian Pusey, and John Cahill. Judith was also preceded in death by her only son, Stephen Cahill; grandson, Kenneth Gowers; and all eight of her siblings.
Judy leaves behind her daughters, Jill Lanagan and Juliette (Devon) Jones. Along with four grandchildren, Tyler Gowers, Annie McGarr, Hillarie Gowers, and Logan Gowers. Judith also has three great-grandchildren, Taiden Gowers, Aurora McGarr, and Opal Alberts. She will be greatly missed by her extended family of nieces and nephews as well as anyone that knew her.
Judy was a dynamic, vivacious woman with a ready retort and acerbic wit. She was greatly admired by anyone that had the honor to know her. Judy worked for the State of Utah Youth Corrections and often quipped that when she went on shift all the kids said, “Here comes Judy quit swearing”.
Judy was generous to a fault, and was always at the ready with words of solace, humor or advice, sometimes all at the same time. She spent many years living in Mesquite, Nevada making many friends and frequenting the local gambling establishments, where she was often greeted with a chorus of “Hello, Darling!” in their best British accents. When asked how she was doing she would always reply, “Nothing that a million dollars couldn’t make better.”
As she aged, whenever anyone asked if she needed anything, her response was always “6 foot tall, handsome, with a 6-figure income, and a guide dog”. She was in good spirits and kept everyone on their toes through her last breath.
Judy adamantly did not want any services or a “celebration of life”. So instead, we will be having a sendoff at Jill and Judy’s residence on Saturday, June 13, 2026 from 2 to 5 p.m.
Please email mommajeansblog@gmail.com if you would like to attend and need the address. We ask that anyone that would like to contribute or donate, please donate instead to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital as Judith had been donating for over 30 years.
For now, abiento.
