Listen to Obituary

Judith “Judi” Jenkins Allan, 86, passed away after a brief hard-fought battle with pneumonia at Timpanogas Hospital in Orem, Utah.

Anyone who knew Judi well knew she had a generous heart, a funny sense of humor, and a charismatic and loving personality. She was a loyal friend and opened her heart and her home to many people along the way. She loved people of all kinds regardless of nationality, race or religion. She was good at recognizing the needs of others, particularly single mothers, and trying to help. She also loved to work hard, loving the work and the people. In her own words, “I was good at it.” She also did beautiful handwork in cross-stitch and crocheting.

Judi was born in Preston, Idaho, the only daughter of Joseph Roy and Ruth Gayman Jenkins. She was raised in a one-bedroom home in Ogden, Utah. Her father was an invalid from when she was 3 years old till he died when she was 17. Her mother worked full-time to support the family and care for her father.

She graduated from Ogden High School where she was involved in choir, volleyball, and basketball. After high school, she attended Weber Junior College for a short time and worked at Mountain Bell with her mom.

Judi married Donald T. Walker in 1959 and gave birth to son Scott (1960) and daughters Wendy (1962) and Joelle (1964). A second son, Jeffery Reed, was born in 1961, but lived only six days due to a congenital heart defect.

After Wendy was born the family moved to Las Vegas where Judi was a desk clerk at the La Concha Motel on the Strip. She met a lot of really interesting people working there. When she did not have a babysitter, she would check her children into one of the rooms—during which they loved swimming at the pool, getting room service and jumping on the beds.

Judi divorced and married Robert M. Lozano and the family moved to California, Texas, and back to California. Judi worked as an office manager/accounts payable clerk for several different companies. Sadly, Robert had a massive stroke and as he recovered decided to go back to his family.

She and her children moved to Riverside, California where she was able to purchase a home. For the first time she owned a home where she and her children could live together and have some stability. She worked as an office manager for Inland Lighting Supplies.

After several years she met and married Barton N. Allan in 1981. Through their 43-year marriage they lived in Riverside and Morro Bay, California, and Draper and Murray, Utah. Together they owned and operated a photography studio and one-hour photo processing business and a few different Real Estate offices.

After moving back to Utah, she worked for Copper Rivet in Accounts Payable until that company went out of business.

Judi was active all her life in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as the Junior Sunday School Coordinator in every ward she lived in for many years and later as a Primary teacher for years. Sprinkled through the years she taught Relief Society and finally was the Humanitarian leader in her ward. She had the ward involved in many projects with crocheting blankets for the NICU, making quilts for the church humanitarian center, collecting yarn for the prisoners, and collecting candy for the Christmas stockings for Utah Youth Village, among other projects.

Judi and her husband served as Host Missionaries at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City, Utah for 14 plus years. She also was a docent for the Sorensen Home Pioneer Museum for several years.

Judi served on the Salt Lake Council of Women for many years, elected as the President for two years in a row. She was honored with two bricks laid at the entrance and three yellow rosebushes planted in her honor at the International Peace Garden in Salt Lake City.

She belonged to a businesswoman’s sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, for more than 30 years and held many leadership positions on the chapter and council levels. As President, she led the sorority to raise money for scholarships for single mothers to attend college.

For the last few years, she lived at Crescent Senior Living in Sandy and most recently at Covington Senior Living/Memory Care in Orem. The staff at both locations gave beautiful and loving care as she suffered from the effects of Alzheimer’s.

Judi is survived by her children, Scott (Janie) Walker, Wendy (Russ) Bird, and Joelle Chatfield; stepson, Donald Allan; 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband, Barton N. Allan; son, Jeffery Reed Walker; and her parents.
