Joseph William Holmes

Joseph “Joe” William Holmes passed away on June 16, 2023, at the age of 79. He was born to Joseph Elbert and Doris Marie Sullivan Holmes on June 8, 1944, in Pocatello, Idaho. The family moved to Boise, Idaho, where Joe grew up before moving to Hyrum, Utah, where he graduated from South Cache High School.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the Northwest Indian Mission. He served on the reservations in North and South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. He served in many capacities in the church. He was a high priest in the South Ogden 7th Ward and had a strong testimony and love for the Savior that he shared often. 

Joe  married his eternal companion, Ann Marie Despain, on March 16, 1966, in the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple. They were blessed with six children. 

He attended Boise State University before enlisting in the United States Army. He served in Chicago and Korea. 

Joe worked in the construction trade as a brick mason, general contractor, building inspector, and project manager. He used his construction skills to serve many neighbors and friends. After his career in construction, he started developing web pages, doing research on supplements and alternative medicine, and writing. He was very handy and creative, spending hours in his shop designing and building several  inventions, including a seat for walking sticks, an adult tricycle, as well as a modified exercise bike. 

Joe loved his family and they have many good memories of their time together. He is survived by his wife, Ann; daughter, Joanne (Lew) Stoddard of North Ogden; sons, William (Kim) Holmes of Mahomet, Illinois, and Eric Holmes of Sunset; daughter, Charee (Shawn) McKay of South Ogden; 16 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren on the way; 2  brothers and 3 sisters. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jean; and son, Tim; as well as his father and mother; brothers, James, David, and Paul; and sister, Charlotte. 

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 23, 2023 at 11 a.m. at the South Ogden 7th Ward Chapel, 720 Nancy Drive, South Ogden, Utah. Friends may visit with the family on Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 at the church. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, where full military honors will be accorded.
