John West Barton passed away on November 6, 2023. John was the first of four children born to John Preston and Harriett West Barton on January 21, 1948.
John attended and graduated from Sandia High School in Albuquerque NM, going on to attend the University of Utah before being drafted into the Army and fulfilling his passion to defend all he loved. John was drafted into the United States Army in 1971 during the Vietnam War. He attended Officers Candidate School and became an Army Officer in the Armor Corps before transitioning into Army Aviation. John flew the AH-1 Cobra and the OH-58 Scout Helicopters during Desert Storm, after 24 years of exemplary service to his country retired in 1994. John went on to spend 20 years as a very successful financial advisor with First Command Financial Planning, building lifelong friendships doing what he loved, helping people.
John was married to the love of his life Carla Moss on Jan 23 1970. They spent 53 amazing years together and were blessed with three amazing children. Tami (Glenn) Johnson, Braum (Cassidy) Barton and Tara (Brady) Elwood, 11 grandchildren, two great granddaughters and a great grandson on the way.
John was an avid hunter, fisherman, jack of all trades. He enjoyed boating with his family, riding his loved Harley with friends and the many memories made.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his seven loving and loyal Dobermans.
The family would like to thank the U of U Transplant Team and the Donor family for giving us 10 more years with him!
Funeral services will be held Saturday November 11, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah. Friends may visit with family Friday November 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the mortuary.
