Listen to Obituary

John Wayne Sims, 82, passed away peacefully at McKay-Dee Hospital on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, of natural causes, with his family by his side.

John is the son of Darwin Wayne and Norma Dickson Sims. He was born November 25, 1942, in the Sims Hotel in Evanston, Wyoming,

Raised and schooled in St. George and then Roy, he graduated from Weber High School, Class of 1961.

John worked in infrastructure construction for a summer with his father in southern Utah and then started college.

John served an honorable full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from March of 1964 to June of 1966 in the Brazil South Mission, where he learned to speak Portuguese.

John married the love of his life, Barbara Stevens, on March 17, 1967, in Logan, Utah, where they were sealed for time and all eternity.

John was drafted and served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War as an Artillery Surveyor and was then discharged in the fall of 1969.

After his army service, he graduated from Weber State College, Magna Cum Laude, in the fall of 1971, with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Accounting.

Together, John and Barbara raised three wonderful children, Scott, Karen, and David.

John worked for the IRS long enough to realize that there were better things for him to do.

He enjoyed fixing pretty much anything. John dreamed of owning his own business, so when a partnership in D&B Repair in Roy became available, John signed on. He was a mechanic at heart and enjoyed co-owning his own garage and towing business for ten years.

John and Barbara built their home in Roy together in 1975. As the family grew, Barbara dreamed of a large home to gather the family together. In 1989, they moved the family to her dream home in Kaysville. That home has been a special place ever since and the family has made countless memories there. He loved to work in the detached garage with the boys, and to repair vehicles with his kids, grandkids, or whoever else needed some help. John was very generous with whatever he had. Most of all, he loved teaching his children.

John and Barbara spent much of their life together in entrepreneurial pursuits, building a legacy as successful relationship and marketing experts. They led countless families on a mutual quest for financial independence. As motivational speakers, they helped many to become successful business owners and community leaders. John’s influence continues to span the globe.

He will be remembered for his unfailing kindness, determination, intellect, wit, and his genuine concern for others. His unwavering belief in God and in the American Dream were hallmarks of his career. John has been a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints his entire life and set the example of faith and service to everyone who knew him.

John is survived by his bride of 58 years, Barbara Sims, Kaysville; children, Scott R. (Lainie) Sims, Lehi, Karen (Shawn) Cottle, Fruit Heights, and David W. (Kristen) Sims, Kaysville; 12 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; by his siblings, Sheila (Stan) Porter, Syracuse; Beki (Brett) Barlow, Dammeron Valley; and Lisa (Russ) Ence, Ivins.

John was preceded in death by his parents and by his grandson, Chad K. Cottle, and by his siblings, Harvey Thomas “Tom” Sims and Joleene “Jodie” Sims Smith.
