John Bilanzich Jr.

October 8, 1947 — July 1, 2025

On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, John Bilanzich Jr. of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away peacefully at the age of 77. He spent his final years content and cared for by his family. He was surrounded by love in the home of his daughter Lauren, and son-in-law Malachi, a place filled with parties and get-togethers, traditions, laughter, organized chaos, compassion, and service. It was exactly how he would have wanted it; with family, at home, in peace.

John was born to John Jack Bilanzich and Helena Frances Smolka Bilanzich. He carried his name with great pride and purpose. Proud to be a Junior, proud of his heritage, and proud to pass that legacy on to his children and grandchildren.

John was a peacemaker. A man with a generous, tender heart. He was dedicated and loyal. John was somewhat of a storyteller, always sharing a different version of the same off-the-wall story or joke that left people laughing… and sometimes scratching their heads! He was large in stature but had a lightness that lifted those around him.

He served in the Army National Guard of Utah from April 3, 1967, until his honorable discharge on April 2, 1973. A true patriot, John offered gratitude for his country and its freedoms, and protection for those serving diligently in every prayer he offered. His appreciation for sacrifice, his own and that of others, was a core part of who he was.

On December 9, 1972, John married his “Better Half," Anne, and one year later, on December 11, 1973, they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. John was baptized just before their marriage on October 19, 1972, in the chilly waters of Bear Lake. A transformative covenant that changed his life from that day forward.

Anne often said that John made her feel she could do anything. Instilling this confidence in another person is a rare talent, one to be commended. Their love for one another was steadfast, supportive, devoted, and loyal. Together they celebrated 48 years of marriage, and her memory remained a daily presence in his life after her passing.

A graduate of the University of Utah Pharmacy School on June 3, 1972, John dedicated 47 years to his career as a pharmacist. Over that time, he managed several pharmacies, working in retail, hospitals, and the county jail. He offered his knowledge, friendship, and kindness to countless people in his community. His work ethic was unmatched.

Family was John’s everything. He showed up with pride in every way! From embarrassingly loud sideline grandpa coaching at soccer and basketball games, to watching in awe, with a glimmer in his eye, as his granddaughters captivated the audience with their beautiful dancing. He was there to celebrate the highs and comfort in the lows; to quietly build the foundation, with Anne, that held everyone together. He truly sacrificed many earthly possessions to provide ways for his children to excel in their ambitions. He was the kind of father who loved individually and unconditionally. He raised his kids to be self-sufficient and successful.

In his later years, John became an example of strength, perseverance, and resilience. He survived multiple myeloma, leukemia, prostate cancer, and underwent two bone marrow transplants. A walking miracle; often referred to as “the man with nine lives.” Through it all, he rarely complained, was only grumpy on occasion, never gave up, and never lost his gentle spirit. Even in pain, he smiled. Even in hardship, he was kind. He faced every battle with his family by his side and with quiet bravery.

He was a true outdoorsman at heart. His earliest outdoor memories were formed at Fish Lake as a young boy, where hunting, fishing, and nature became lifelong passions. Any chance to be outdoors, with God's miraculous creations, was a gift to him! It wasn’t just the sport he loved… it was the time spent teaching grandchildren to tie fishing knots and cast their poles. The time at camp with his sons, sons-in-law and hunting buddies. The delicious dutch oven meals around the fire, the peace and quiet late into the dark, starry nights. Those moments meant the world to him.

After many years of searching, John fulfilled a lifelong dream by purchasing a mountain cabin at Causey Estates. A peaceful retreat where he poured in sweat and love, and where his family gathered to make memories that will last forever. He was also a master gardener; tending a plentiful garden and yard that reflected his patience, hard work, and pride in simple beauty and never-ending tomatoes!

John will be remembered as a peacemaker. Humble and patient. Hardworking and giving. The best of the best, a good man. One who lived by example, never by ego. He leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love, vacation memories galore, days on the lake, laughter, hard work, and unwavering strength. We love you to infinity!

John is survived by his children: Travis (Tamara) Bilanzich, Brandon Bilanzich, Lauren (Malachi) Goff, Lindsey (Nate) Rizley. Cherished grandchildren: TJ (Kelsie), Madison, Lacy Bilanzich, Caitlin Bilanzich, Ava, Lilly, Claire, Ruby, Malachi “Kai” Goff, Abby, Liam, and Chloe Rizley. And his brother Robert “Bob” (Cindy), and sister Linda Bilanzich.

John is preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Anne Bilanzich; and parents, John and Helena Bilanzich.
