John Alexander Berrett, 51, passed away on December 3, 2025, following a tragic accident, after a life marked by grit, humor, and a hard-won journey toward peace. Born October 8, 1974, in Salt Lake City, the son of Bert Emmett and Sandra Kay Berrett. John later moved to Ogden where he spent the rest of his life surrounded by the mountains, open roads, and family he loved.
John graduated from Weber High School and went on to work side by side with his father in the construction business. He was proud of the work they built together and carried that sense of craftsmanship and determination throughout his life.
Anyone who knew John knew his quick wit and jokester’s spirit. He lived directly and honestly—never one to hide how he felt—and he brought laughter wherever he went. He loved being outdoors, especially when motorcycles, dirt bikes, camping trips, fishing poles, or days on the boat were involved. Those were the moments when he felt most alive.
In recent years, John underwent profound personal change. He found God, embraced sobriety through AA, and committed himself wholeheartedly to rebuilding the relationships that mattered most. His meetings, his spiritual growth, and his effort to reconnect with his children and grandchildren were sources of deep meaning and pride.
He is survived by his mother Sandra Berrett; his siblings Bert Berret, Sherrie Berrett, Steven Barrett, and Martin Barrett; his children Kayla Schwede, Lindsey Thomson, and Emmett Odekirk, four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who brought him joy and hope.
John was preceded in death by his father Bert Berrett.
John’s story was one of struggle, laughter, resilience, and redemption. He will be remembered for the love he gave, the honesty he lived by, his dedicated hard work and the peace he fought to find.
The family is currently working to raise the funds needed to bring John home so he can be laid to rest surrounded by those who loved him. Any contribution—no matter the size—would be deeply appreciated and would help ease the burden during this difficult time. Donations will go directly toward transportation and funeral expenses, and the family is grateful for every act of kindness and support. Donations may be made to go fund me, Go Fund Me for John or through venmo: @sherrie-berrett-1 or directly to Lindquist Mortuary, 801-394-6666.
Funeral services for John are currently pending and will be scheduled once the necessary funds have been raised to bring him.
