Joan Tayler Rhead passed away peacefully at her home on May 11, 2026, at the age of 92. She was born on March 29, 1934, in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. She reflected fondly of her early years in Canada with her family where she developed a strong testimony of her Savior and a desire to serve Him. She graduated at the top of her class and received extensive training to become an executive assistant.
At the age of 19, Joan left Canada to pursue her own dreams to study nursing and provide compassionate care to those in need. She worked as the executive secretary for the Dean of the University of Utah School of Medicine, attended BYU School of Nursing, and later worked at the Ogden Clinic.
Joan Tayler married Raymond Rhead on December 28, 1956, in the Salt Lake Temple. She was an incredibly devoted wife and mother. Joan gave their children the most valuable gifts that any parent can give – her testimony of Jesus Christ and her time. Joan was the spiritual foundation of our home and spent countless hours mentoring her family and helping them obtain Eagle Scout and educational degrees. Ray and Joan have six children, Vance (Lori), Vern (Lisa), Mark (Susan), Brad, Karen (Matthew) Flitton, and Rebecca (Matthew) Tuttle. In addition, she has 14 beautiful grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren whom she adores. She treasured her family - teaching, supporting, and serving them with patience, kindness, and love. Joan spent her life encouraging and building up others. She was affectionately known as “Mother Hen” to all those who knew her well.
Joan was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings. She and her husband completed a humanitarian service mission in Bangalore, India and temple missions in Manila, Philippines and Ogden, Utah. Joan has a deep love for her Savior. She truly loved those whom she served and developed many bonds that will last through the eternities. After serving their final temple mission, Raymond passed away and Joan has longed to be with him ever since.
Joan travelled extensively throughout the world and enjoyed seeing different cultures, people, and landscapes. She also loved family vacations, slowing down in the outdoors, fishing, camping in the Fireball trailer, playing pinochle, reading, and making memories. She cherished her trips to Mesquite with Brad to dip her feet in the pool, enjoy the palm trees, sunshine, and her Mesquite family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; son, Mark; and grandson, Nathan. Although Joan will be greatly missed, her family finds peace knowing she is reuniting with many loved ones.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Burch Creek Hollow Ward, 720 Nancy Drive, South Ogden.
