Jerry DeGroot, a cherished figure in both his family and community, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on February 20, 1938, “Back before television” in Ogden, Utah to David and Helen DeGroot. Jerry lived a life that was rich with purpose, dedication, and a deep love for those around him.
A graduate of Ogden High School, Jerry went on to enjoy a prosperous career as assistant Vice President and Manager at Commercial Security and Key Bank. His professional journey was complemented by his commitment to public service. He served for 2 decades as Councilman, assistant mayor and President of the Lions Club for Riverdale City. He held the esteemed position of School Board President for Weber School District. His contributions to these positions reflect not only his leadership skills but also his unwavering dedication to bettering his community. He played an integral role on the founding board of Ogden for Shaken Baby Syndrome.
Jerry married Jeanette Carter on May 19, 1958 in Malad, Idaho, they were later sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple. Together they had four wonderful children. Jeanette passed away July 28, 2005.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Jerry was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served as Bishop, Scout Leader, and Ward Clerk.
In his leisure time, Jerry was a passionate sports fan; he ardently supported teams such as Steve Young’s 49ers, BYU, and Jim McMahon’s Chicago Bears. He rarely missed watching a Utah Jazz game. He found joy in golfing, fishing, and playing softball, but for the last four years his favorite pastime was listening to music and playing BINGO!! His love for John Wayne, horses, and dogs was evident to all who knew him, highlighting his appreciation for companionship and the great outdoors.
A man with character and integrity. His impact will be felt for years to come by the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed by all but fondly remembered for his laughter, kindness, dedication to community and unwavering spirit. He NEVER missed a day without expressing gratitude and love for his family.

Jerry is survived by his children, Darren (Rhonda) DeGroot, Steven DeGroot, Ron (Lori) DeGroot and son-in-law Scott McCoard, 8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Also survived by his brothers, David (Kathy) DeGroot and Keith DeGroot.
Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jeanette DeGroot; daughter Melody DeGroot McCoard, parents, David and Helen DeGroot; twin brother, Larry DeGroot; and sister-in-laws, LaRae and Debbie.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 18, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, South Morgan Cemetery.
