Jeffrey Orson Hollist, 82, of Kaysville Utah, died peacefully in his home on February 5, 2026, with his wife by his side.
Jeff was born in Brigham City, Utah, on November 16, 1943, to Orson LeRoy and Jennie Brown Hollist. He was the sixth of the ten Hollist children. His family moved to Kaysville when he was in first grade. He spent his childhood milking the family cow and tending to the crops and fruit trees on the family farm. He attended Davis High School and played on the basketball team, football team, and ran track, all while trying to keep up with the lofty academic expectations set by his older siblings. He graduated from Davis High School in 1961.
Following high school, he served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Southern States, Texas Mission, he loved serving the people of Texas. After returning from his mission he resumed his college education until he served in the U.S. Army as a medic and occupational therapist stationed in Denver, Colorado, where he helped care for soldiers who were wounded during the Vietnam War.
Following his military service he graduated from Weber State University with bachelor degrees in Chemistry and Computer Science and later obtained a master's degree in Mathematics from the University of Utah. He taught for one year at Bountiful High School before moving to Davis High School where he would spend the remainder of his 34-year career teaching mathematics and computer technology.
He was sealed to his eternal companion, Carla Jansen, on May 31, 1974, in the Salt Lake Temple. They moved to their current home in Kaysville where they have lived for the past 48 years, raising their six children, and enjoying the company of their 14 grandchildren as often as possible.
Jeff never met a yard that didn't need mowing or a garden that didn't need weeding. He tried to pass this work ethic down to his children by striving to have them mow as many lawns and pull as many weeds as possible during his lifetime. When his own yard proved insufficient to the task, he made sure to mow the lawn and pull the weeds of any strugglers or others that might be in need of help in the surrounding neighborhood.
When he wasn't working, he spent endless hours outside playing H.O.R.S.E., playing catch, or making sure no one flooded the sandbox. His big, lovely yard was a football field, a basketball court, a golf course, a baseball field, and any other field you can think of. His favorite pastime was building intricate 3D mathematical models of various shapes and sharing the complicated mathematical names of the shapes with anyone that was willing to listen. He loved giving $20 bills in "fun money" to his kids, grandkids, and whatever other people happened to be around.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Taylor, sister Rella, He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carla Jansen Hollist. Six children LoriAnne (Ian) Auger, Timothy (Michele) Hollist, Ted (Sandra) Hollist, Douglas (Shanell) Hollist, Jan Hollist, Scott (Stephanie) Hollist, and 14 grandkids, several granddogs, and one grandpig. He is also survived by seven of his nine siblings and their spouses, Taylor (deceased) (Suzanne) Hollist, Martha (Craig) Rushforth, Nancy (Vance) Pace, Robert (Elna) Hollist, Alice (Gerry) Giauque, Dawnell (David) Tingey, Rand (Marla) Hollist, Rella (deceased) (Bill) Moyes, Jolynn (Chuck) Bean.
