On July 17, 2025, Jean Bateman Hull peacefully passed away at the home of her daughter in Mesa, Arizona, at the age of 94 years old.
Jean was born on December 9, 1930, in Murray, Utah, to Edward Allen Bateman and Orrell Emma Greenwood. She is the sixth of eight children. At the age of two, her father became the Superintendent of the Logan Public Schools, and the family moved to Logan, Utah. During her second grade year, the entire family went to New York City, New York, and lived there for a year while her father completed his Ph.D. at Columbia University. Jean had vivid memories of this time in her life. At the age of eight, she was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on February 4, 1939, in the Manhattan Ward. She attended public school and made friends with children from different cultures and backgrounds. The family took advantage of all the cultural and educational opportunities New York had to offer. Her experience in New York helped form her life passion for culture, education, and service.
Jean moved from Logan to Salt Lake City, Utah, in the middle of ninth grade when her father was elected Utah State Superintendent of Public Instruction. She graduated from South High School in 1948. She excelled in secretarial work. She sang in the prestigious South High Choir and was an accomplished pianist.
Jean met William (Bill) Robert Hull at a sorority dance while attending Utah State University. They were married on May 29, 1953, in the Salt Lake City L.D.S. temple. After graduation, they moved to Palo Alto, California, where Bill earned his Physical Therapy Degree at Stanford University. They lived in Darmstadt, Germany, from 1955 - 1957 while Bill served in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corp. Bill and Jean lived a short time in Ogden, Utah, and Sunnyvale, California, until they moved to Pocatello, Idaho in 1960 where they lived the rest of their life together.
Jean spent her life serving in her community, participating in and enjoying cultural events, and being a wonderful friend to everyone around her. Her civic activities in the community involved volunteer work at the hospitals, having also served as president of the ladies auxiliary at Bannock Memorial Hospital. She was active in the Parent Teachers Association (PTA), serving at one time as President of PTA for Franklin Junior High. She had season tickets to the Idaho State Symphony and sang with the Camerata Singers. She was a voracious reader and helped establish the Les Belles Literary Club where she served as President and other officer positions. She served in her church in the Primary and was Cub Scout leader. She served in Relief Society as President of her ward organization, Counselor in her Stake organization, Homemaking Chair, and Music Director. She was a dedicated visiting teacher. She was an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and was recently recognized for her 60 plus years of membership.
Jean had a witty sense of humor, was a sunbathing beauty, an excellent cook, a master at card games, artistic, and a great listener. She would give a look full of unspoken words, was intuitive, prayerful, understanding, and loving. She encouraged her children to pursue their talents and supported them throughout their lives. The family has fond memories of her with her siblings laughing and enjoying each other. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend and always expressed how grateful she was to be part of a loving and close family and community. Jean moved to Mesa, Arizona, in 2012 after the passing of her husband and lived with her daughter Kristin Cook the rest of her life. She enjoyed being surrounded by family and the frequent visits from children and grandchildren.
Jean is survived by her four children; Robert Edward (Shannon) Hull of Auburn, Washington; Kristin Kay (Dean) Cook of Mesa, Arizona; Janet Sue Damron of Mesa, Arizona, and Karen Jean McFarland of Alexandria, Virginia; twelve grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and one sister. She was preceded in death by her husband and six siblings.
