Jawin Clark Westover, age 82, returned home peacefully due to health complications on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. He was born on October 9, 1942, in Lakeside, Arizona. His parents Julia ,Harold and six siblings moved from Hyde Park, UT to Ogden, UT his Senior year where he met Sandra Steele, his high school sweetheart. He graduated from Ben Lomond High School in 1960. He joined the Navy and served active duty for two years on aircraft carriers stationed out of Alameda,CA. When he returned he continued his education at Weber State College, where he studied commercial art and photography. On May 24, 1963, Jawin married Sandra in the Logan Utah Temple. It was the beginning of a devoted partnership that spanned over five decades. Together they raised a family and built a life grounded in faith, love, and service.

His first job in his youth was working in a bean field near his home in Hyde Park, Utah. His primary profession was in quality assurance, He contributed his expertise to NASA’s shuttle program and worked on the Peacekeeper and Minuteman missile systems at Thiokol. Other employment included being a postman, an aircraft mechanic, side jobs in commercial art, multiple home sales businesses, AOL tech support, Phoenix Services helping people with disabilities and a reading tutor at Wasatch. During his professional life he served in the Navy Reserves and went on to serve as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 in the United States Navy. He loved to tell stories about his experiences in Japan while with the Navy.

Jawin and Sandra made their home in many places — including Ogden and Pleasant View, Utah; Lompoc, California; Cheyenne, Wyoming; North Ogden and Roy, Utah — creating 14 homes together. With each move, they cultivated gardens and flower beds, teaching his children the value of hard work and bringing beauty wherever they lived. They kept many local nurseries in business.

He loved many outdoor activities such as fishing, camping, exploring National and State Parks, rock hunting and gathering, panning for gold and spending time at the cabin at Steele Square in the Uinta Mountains. He enjoyed photography, geology, all things J.R. Tolkien, Beatle, singing along to songs in his falsetto voice and square dancing — he and Sandra were active participants in square dance clubs and conventions for many years.

A faithful and devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jawin magnified many callings in the church. He served as both ward and stake missionary, and as a devoted home teacher. He also served as an Assistant Scoutmaster, sharing his leadership, patriotism, and love of the outdoors. One of his most cherished callings was serving alongside Sandra as a Host Missionary at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building for over a decade. He last served as a family history consultant, another of his passions. His testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ was unwavering.

After Sandra’s passing on March 15, 2020, Jawin was blessed to find love again. He married Valerie Barker on April 22, 2022, and they enjoyed a tender and meaningful companionship filled with laughter and take-out every 22nd of each month.

Jawin had a gift for making others feel valued and at ease. He was deeply loyal, gentle, and kind — a true example of selfless love and quiet strength. He always had a story to tell and had a remarkable memory. His life was marked by enduring friendships, deep compassion, unconditional love, and unwavering devotion to family and faith.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Valerie; his children Laurie (Ron) Graham of Dolan Springs, AZ; Annette (Chad) Hazeldine of Greeley, CO; Kathy (Kit) Baker of Clearfield, UT; John (Kaydee) Westover of Clearfield, UT; grandchildren Lisa, Maizey, Chloe, Logan, and Katelyn; great-grandchildren Evan and Lily; step-grandchildren Amanda, Kitty, Tiffany, Jennifer, Taya, Elizabeth, Allison, and Danielle; great step-grandchildren Avy and Jackson.
