Janice Plummer Barking (Jan) passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on May 31, 2025 at 92 years of age in Layton, Utah. She was born February 6, 1933 in Amarillo, Texas to John Cornelius (Jack) Plummer and Eunice Elizabeth Byrd. She grew up in Amarillo, Texas; Portales, New Mexico; and Tucumcari, New Mexico with older sister Evelyn and twin sister Bernice. After graduating from Tucumcari High School in 1951 she attended the University of New Mexico.
At UNM she met an engineering student from Jal, New Mexico, Frank Lee Barking, and they were married at First Baptist Church of Tucumcari on August 29, 1953. She interrupted her college to start a family. After Frank graduated in 1955, they moved to Bountiful, Utah for Frank’s job at the Phillips 66 refinery in Woods Cross.
Jan went back to finish her accounting degree at the University of Utah, graduating in December, 1972. She took a job with Condies Foods, handling all their accounting and was there until she retired.
Music was an important part of her life. She learned piano at a young age and used that skill for her own entertainment, and in church when necessary. She sang in several women’s ensembles in high school and continued to sing in church choirs and in the Bountiful Chapter of Sweet Adelines (later known as Mountain Jubilee Chorus). She enjoyed their trips to regional and international competitions. She was choir director and worship leader at several churches and loved to sing.
Jan was predeceased by her parents, her older sister Evelyn, and her husband Frank. She is survived by her sister, Bernice Marston; and by her four children: Judy Dawn Barking; Frank Lee Barking Jr. (Deniece); Belinda Barking; and Barbara Ann Barking Berry; five grandchildren: Kendall Nicholson; Casey Frank Barking (Abbi); Jennifer Berry (David Frederick); Janet Berry; and Jessica Berry (Chris Stevens); and two great-grandchildren: Amanda Berry; and Serafina Stevens.
