James Oney Johnson

October 4, 1941 — January 10, 2024

James Oney Johnson, 82, our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024. He was born October 4, 1941, at home in Sumner, Iowa to Herbert and Edythe Johnson.

 

He was raised and attended Country Schools in Bremer County, graduating from Sumner High School in 1960. He was married to Vicki Mueller in 1962, they were later divorced. In 1970, he married Fern Hampton and together they raised their combined family of nine children. James Jr. was born to them in 1973.

 

James spent most of his career as a truck driver, working in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and Utah, retiring from Albertson’s. James loved watching old westerns, reading Louis L’Amour western novels, watching the Utah Jazz, fishing and hunting with family and friends, telling of his many antics and adventures, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

 

James is survived by nine children, Robert Carroll, Stan Hampton, Gary (Judy) Hampton, Dave Hampton, Steve (Sue) Hampton, Randall Hampton, Jami (Ron) Martinez, Jodi (Dave) Salaman and James Jr. (Shelyce) Johnson; 30 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild, 1 on the way; a brother, Dick (Ruby) Johnson and sister Nancy (Lee) Graf.

 

James was preceded in death by his wife Fern, a son, Jay Johnson, his parents, brothers, David Johnson, Russell Johnson a sister Lavonne and his faithful companion Scottie Boy.

 

A Celebration of Life will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2024, at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah.
