James Gerald Mertens, lovingly known as “Captain Jimmy,” peacefully passed away on March 14, 2026, in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he had resided for over 17 years. He was 61 years old. His wife, Leah, held his hand as he sailed to a distant shore to be reunited with his parents, Gerhard and Waltraut.
Jim will be deeply missed by his daughter, Kimberly Etherington, and her husband, Jordan; his stepson, Joshua Thomas; his siblings, Robert Mertens, Thomas Mertens (Debbie), Gordon Mertens (Julie), and Monica Harrison (Kyle); as well as many nieces, nephews, friends, and coworkers.
Born in Salt Lake City, Jim graduated from East High School and later from Columbia College. His happiest moments were spent sailing with his family on Bear Lake. Sailing wasn’t just a hobby—it was a lifelong passion. He also loved cars, especially his Mustang, which he joked he wanted to be buried in. A devoted reader, Jim was exceptionally well read and always eager to learn.
In his final days, Jim was surrounded by an outpouring of love. Friends and family visited daily, filling his room with laughter, something Jim inspired effortlessly with his sharp wit and warm humor. He never forgot a birthday and always made the effort to reach out.
Jim was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings, but his favorite—despite initially resisting it—was Ward Mission Leader. He cherished his time with the missionaries and found great joy in witnessing several individuals choose baptism.
Jim and Leah first stood together in the bridal party of his brother’s wedding. Seventeen years later, they were reintroduced, fell in love, and married, blending their families. They are immensely proud of Kim and Joshua and love them deeply.
As the youngest of his siblings, Jim now has the long-awaited opportunity to spend time with his father, who passed away when Jim was just under two years old.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the staff and nurses at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas. Their compassionate care, and their comments about Jim’s constant stream of visitors and his unforgettable humor, brought comfort during a difficult time.
You are already missed, Captain Jimmy.
