PLEASANT VIEW — Howard D. Nielsen passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 21, 2025. He was born on September 23, 1938, in Logan, Utah, to Easton Henry and Juanita Dustin Nielsen. Between brothers, Ross and Dwight. Howard was raised in Hyrum, Utah, and briefly Gabbs, Nevada. He graduated from South Cache High, served in the Central Atlantic States Mission, and then earned an Economics degree from Utah State in 1964.
During his career, he worked as an economist for the Department of Agriculture in Washington D.C; purchasing agent for the Forest Service in Ogden; Department of Defense Contracting Officer at both Hill Air Force Base and Thiokol, and the Chief of Contracts for the F-16 Plant in Murted, Turkey.
While they were both working at Thiokol, he met Annette Cooper. She planned to move to Hawaii, but when he offered her a ring, she took a chance on him instead. They married on June 28, 1963, in the Logan Temple. For most of their 61 years together they have lived in Pleasant View, Utah.
He retired in 1998, and has filled his days with family, faith, gardening, travel, watching Gunsmoke, and trips to Smith & Edwards.
As a faithful Christian, Howard has fulfilled many, many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon his death he was Emeritus Stake Patriarch.
Howard is a self-described common man who drove a common (big, blue) van, but he’s had dogs with pedigrees. His family thinks of him as the family prayer guy, their rock, and the best Black Friday shopper ever. He celebrated his 80th birthday with a trip to Seattle, Washington and his family may have taken him to Carl’s Jr. for a burger. He was a very loved man.
Howard is survived by his beloved wife and companion, Annette; three children, Caprus (Klaus) Hotze of Landesbergen, Germany; Callette Nielsen of Seattle, Washington; and Burke Cooper Nielsen of Pleasant View, Utah; four cherished grandchildren, Melissa (Lorenz) Krywualt, Jayson Hotze, Katherine Elizabeth Nielsen, and Madeleine Klaire Nielsen; and sisters-in-law, Cherill and Wendy.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, Howard; his daughter, Carol; his parents; and his brothers, Ross Easton Nielsen and Dwight Seth Nielsen.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Orchard Springs 17th Ward, 900 West Pleasant View Dr. Friends may visit with family on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 N. Washington Blvd. and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment, at 2 p.m. at Wellsville Cemetery. Wellsville Utah.
We are especially grateful for our brother Burke, whose love, devotion, and steady care meant so much to our parents, and who was by Dad’s side when he passed, along with his daughter, Madi. We are also deeply thankful for the love and support of our neighbors, family, and friends, whose prayers, kindness, and willingness to help have meant more to us than we can express.
Services will be live-streamed and available the day of the services by scrolling to the bottom of Howard’s obituary page at: www.lindquistmortuary.com where condolences may also be shared.
