Howard leaves behind a legacy as a loving husband, devoted father, and adored Opa, cherished not only for his remarkable achievements but for the warmth and guidance he provided to his family and everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.
Born into a life of adventure, Howard's early years were marked by flying, sail boating, and horseback riding. His passion for the skies led him to teach cadets how to fly, funding his college education and setting the stage for a life of service and leadership. Howard's commitment to excellence was evident from his youth, becoming the youngest Eagle Scout in the U.S. at age 12, a title he officially received at 13. His leadership skills flourished in the ROTC in the Air Force and as a Committee Chairman for the Boy Scouts of America for 16 years.
A gifted orator, Howard led his speech and debate team with distinction and shared his love for music and storytelling as a radio DJ with the "Haller for Lunch Bunch." His creative talents flourished as a member of the Writers' Guild, where he penned two movies and scripts for "Paper Chase." As a SAG cardholder, he left his mark on television and film, including working with Jerry Dunphy on "Teen Trials”, engaging audiences on movies through voice overs, and producing "Night of the Tunnel Raiders" starring Adam West.
Professionally, Howard was a trailblazer, becoming the youngest officer at the National Division of Bank of America at 22. His career trajectory saw him excel as Senior Vice President of United Artists and TCI, Managing Director of Anaconda Erickson Finance, and founder of Haller Commercial Real Estate. Notably, Howard's intellect and determination led him to successfully take RETIX public, an accomplishment he achieved through self-education and sheer will. Yet, amidst his professional achievements, Howard's heart remained with his faith and community.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he dedicated ten years as a Scoutmaster, guiding 50+ young men on their path to becoming Eagle Scouts. He also served honorably for 8 years as the executive secretary to 2 bishops in his ward.
Howard's dedication to service extended to his alma mater, California State University, Northridge (CSUN), where as president of the board of directors for two years, he played a pivotal role in raising funds for the construction of new buildings designed to be earthquake safe and for scholarships. His leadership and vision contributed significantly to the advancement of the university, ensuring a safer and brighter future for countless students.
Achieving a lifelong dream since the age of 10, Howard earned his Ph.D. from Gonzaga University, where he embarked on a groundbreaking study in leadership. His dissertation involved personally interviewing over 17 prominent leaders, including senators, business owners, authors, billionaires, and CEOs. This monumental work not only fulfilled a personal milestone but also contributed significantly to the field of leadership studies, offering invaluable insights into the qualities that define true leaders.
