 Harold K. Smith (Herk)

1931-2022

Harold passed away on November 15, 2022 at Creekside Assisted Living in Bountiful, Utah.

He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Elvie E. and Claribel Pepper Smith.  He was raised in Salt Lake and graduated from South High School at the age of 16 and entered the University of Utah.  During college he joined the US Air Force and served in the Korean War. After his discharge he returned to the ‘U’ where he received his Doctorate Degree and was a Clinical Professor in the Graduate School of Social Work, Director of SLC Travelers Aid Society, and later became Director of the Department of Social Work at the U of U Medical Center. After retirement he was a consultant to Rocky Mountain Home Care and Hospice. He also joined the 328th General Hospital US Army where he became a Colonel and Hospital Executive Officer.

Herk married Nancy Diederich, September 9, 1955 in the Salt Lake Temple.  Their marriage was one of great joy and happiness, resulting in four wonderful children, 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Nancy’s death left a big void in his life which was filled by a close relationship with his children, their spouses and grandchildren: Heather, Gretchen, Carlie, Caitlin, Olivia, Jacob, Jon, Racquel, Abigail, Alexandria, Adam, Lauren, Martha, Kyle, Samantha and Nathan.  All were an integral part of his life.  Family and friends were important to him, watching children and grandchildren perform in plays, music, dance and sports. College graduations were special for him as were family outings, dinners, lunch with grandchildren and trips to ‘Dollar Tree.”

He enjoyed fly fishing, hunting and backpacking in the high wilderness; gardening and swimming with friends at the “Rec” center.

Religion was an essential part of his life.  He was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings.

Harold is survived by children Linda Stevens (Scott), Susan Huff (Michael), Alan Smith (Shannon), Karen Burbidge (George), 13 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
