Gwenda Meyer passed away on May 15, 2025, in Layton, Utah, at the age of 93.
Born in Ogden, Utah, on September 30, 1931, to Levi Ephraim and Maud Mathews Cragun, Gwenda was the youngest of twelve siblings — all of whom preceded her in death.
She married Roger Lee Porter in 1952, and together they raised five children. They later divorced, and in 1981, she married Donald AJ Meyer, who preceded her in death.
Gwenda is also preceded in death by her beloved son, Kent (Jean) Porter; her ex-husband, Roger Lee Porter; and grandson, Jaden Porter. She is survived by her four remaining children, Sandra Ward of Tucson, Arizona; Gary Porter of Roy, Utah; Nancy (Craig) Stagg of Nampa, Idaho; and Dennis (Gwyn) Porter of Ogden, Utah. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Vicky (Dave) Berrett and Margo (Jerry), Culwell and Ron (Jean) Meyer and Brent (Pat) Meyer. She also leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren, all of whom she cherished deeply.
Throughout her life, Gwenda exemplified strength, humor, and dedication. She worked at Hill Field and later as a tax examiner for the Internal Revenue Service. After retiring and at the age of 78, she brought her sales and marketing talents to Sun Valley Mortgage as a loan officer.
A gifted and passionate public speaker, Gwenda earned numerous awards through Toastmasters International. She had a lifelong love of poetry, and the Village Blacksmith was one of her favorites. She was also a big fan of Shakespeare and memorized numerous sonnets including the famous sonnet #18 Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day, and she mesmerized her friends and caretakers, reciting Shakespeare, daily.
Gwenda was lovingly known in her neighborhood as “Grandma Wennie” — popsicle vendor, playground monitor, and ever-watchful presence. She was known for her warmth, her wit, and her ability to make ordinary moments unforgettable.
