George Ernest Steckel

January 5, 1932 — September 10, 2023

George Ernest Steckel, 91, a long-time Ogden resident, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Sunday, September 10, 2023. The second of three children born to Leo F. and Laura Lehnhoff Steckel, George was born on January 5, 1932, in Epworth, Iowa.

Raised and schooled in Epworth and later Cedar Rapids, Iowa, George graduated from St. Patrick’s High School Class of 1950. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve for a short time prior to working for Collins Radio, which later became Rockwell, and retiring as a Quality Assurance Manager for them in 1986.

George met his sweetheart, Norma Jean Paul on a blind date – he had a different date and so did she, but they fell in love, began courting, and the rest is history. They were married at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids in 1953 and just celebrated their 70th Anniversary on July 25th.

In addition to living in Cedar Rapids, they spent time in Marion, Iowa, El Paso, Texas, Bountiful, Utah, and these last wonderful years splitting their time between Ogden and Arizona.

George was an artist – he enjoyed teaching Stained Glass work and making beautiful art for over 25 years in Ajo, Arizona in the winters. An avid golfer, George also loved to fish and in later life enjoyed reading and completing sudoku puzzles.

He will be remembered most for his sense of humor, his affable, genuine nature, and for his tender, loving ways. He will be greatly missed and forever adored by those who knew him best.

George is survived by his dear wife, Norma Jean Steckel, Ogden; children, Daniel A. Steckel, Ajo, Arizona; Robert “Bob” G. (Patty) Steckel, Roy, Utah; Andrew J. Steckel, Marion, Iowa; Julanne McCulley, Sun City, Arizona; and Joseph “Joe” (Sara) Steckel, Layton, Utah; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his sisters, Luetta Sedlacek and Darlene Leinen.

The family will hold private services in his honor and following his wishes, George will be cremated.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Dr. Scott Moulton and of CNS Hospice for their professional and loving care.
