George Monte Rice

July 21, 1936 ~ May 19, 2016

George Monte Rice, 79, passed valiantly into the eternities on May 19, 2016 as he was

surrounded by his wife, four daughters and a grandson in his North Ogden home. He was born on July 21, 1936 in Ogden, Utah, the youngest child of Frederick P. and Sarah Lettie Tracy Rice. He was educated in Ogden, graduating from Weber High School and studying electronics at Weber College.

George served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 58, stationed at West Drayton Air Force Base in England for three years as a Budget and Accounting Specialist. After his honorable release, he and Marjorie Hansen resumed their relationship and on October 24, 1958 were married in the Logan Utah LDS Temple for time and all eternity.

George worked at Hill Air Force Base for 28 years as an aircraft electronics specialist, retiring in 1987. He was skilled in electronics and building and repairing computers, and he used those skills and talents freely to serve others.

He was a high priest of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities including in the presidency of the Palmyra New York LDS Temple from 2000-2003 and in the Nauvoo Illinois LDS Temple as an ordinance worker and assistant recorder from 2004-2006. He was instrumental in establishing the Nauvoo Pageant in 2005 and served as its treasurer.

In December 2006 he suffered a devastating stroke that paralyzed his left side and confined him to a wheelchair with the use of only one hand. Even so, he continued to give to his family and to God, serving as a gospel doctrine teacher, family history consultant, and faithful home teacher. His courage, faith, and good humor never failed and have been an inspiration to his family and friends and all who know him.

He is the beloved patriarch of his family, his wife and sweetheart of 57 years, Marjorie; his four daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and David Cook of Pittsford, New York; Carol Lee and Scott Burton of Westminster, Colorado; Beverly and Robert Kingsford of Pocatello, Idaho; and Jill and Karl Hayes of Layton, Utah; 22 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters, Roselene (David) Smith and Mildred Thompson of North Ogden; Bonnie (Kent) Higley of Hooper; Charlann Mead of South Ogden; and brother, Vernon (Evelene) Rice of West Haven. He has joined those loved ones who went before—his parents; three brothers, Maxon, Austin and Ivan Rice; and a sister, Joy Wold Harrison.
