After a lengthy battle with MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndrome), Gary Howard Meacham decided to break camp and head up the trail to a new one. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of June 5, 2025.
Gary was the first baby born in the new LDS Roosevelt Hospital in Roosevelt, Utah on August 22, 1944. He was the first child born to Sharon and Lila (Nielsen) Meacham, followed by his sister Jeanette two years later. Gary grew up in a “child’s paradise” in Vernal, Utah, frog hunting, riding bikes, building treehouses, etc. He graduated from Uintah High School and continued his education at the University of Utah, where he received a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering. He also served in the United States Army.
Gary and his wife Judy have been married for 55 years. Dad loved family, golf, backpacking, and being outdoors. He was also an avid sports fan. He loved nothing more than supporting grandkids, neighbor kids, and the youth of his ward in their many activities. He served the youth in his ward for many years and developed many close relationships during that time. He lived for spending time in the mountains with his backpacking buddies. Those friends were instrumental in helping carry his pack in the later years so he could still enjoy his time in the mountains. Dad took the scripture, “The Lord’s course is one eternal round,” to heart and tried to spend as much time as possible on the golf course. He was able to travel and play golf at several of the best courses in the world. He had the ability to not only tell you how he played a course hole by hole 10 years ago, but how you played the course as well. He formed many close friendships and family bonds on the golf course over the years.
As important as backpacking and golf were to our dad, nothing compared to his love for his family and the gospel of Jesus Christ. He enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends. The more the merrier! Even before they were old enough to carry their packs, he started backpacking trips to Shingle Creek with the grandkids. Sunday dinners weren’t complete without a game of World Cup in the backyard, or a putting tournament. It was not uncommon for him to bring the grandkids home from Kanab, covered in red dirt, never having changed their clothes. Dad was at every event the grandkids were in, from several different sports, martial arts, and even dance recitals.
He loved his church callings, which allowed him to work with the youth and tried his very best to make a positive impact in their lives. To all his friends and the youth, he worked with, know that he loved you greatly.
We’d like to say a special Thank You for the many years of great care that Dr. Jason Stinnett and his staff gave to our dad. Their kindness and love is greatly appreciated. Dad loved nothing more than to talk golf with Dr. Stinnett. We also want to thank the nurses in the Layton Hospital Infusion center. Every week they set our dad up with a good “tuck and fluff” in order to get him comfortable for his transfusion. Additionally, we would like to thank those at Quality Home Health and Hospice.
We will miss our dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend. His stories, his sayings and his one liner’s but, as he said shortly before his time here was up “let’s get this show on the road”. We will see you again dad, further up the trail.
