Gail Eileen Birdsong, beloved sister, friend, and librarian, passed away 09/19/2025 at Creekside Senior Care Center in Bountiful, Utah.
She was born July 28th, 1944 in Kansas City, Missouri, and moved with her family to Utah in 1950 before settling in Iowa in 1958. A proud graduate of Marshalltown High School, Class of 1962, she went on to earn her degree from Grinnell College and later completed her master’s in library science at Rutgers University.In 1969, she began her career as a librarian in Baltimore, Maryland, where she found her calling. Dedicated and passionate about her work, she rose to become library director, a role in which she touched countless lives through her leadership, mentorship, and devotion to learning.Beyond her professional life, she found great joy in the arts, attending concerts and performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts whenever she could. She also loved the simple pleasures of walking her dogs and being outdoors.She was preceded in death by her father, Stephen, and her mother, Doretha. She is survived by her sisters: Stephanie Gale of Moorhead, Minnesota; Diana Palmer of Bountiful, Utah; and Tracy Birdsong of Salt Lake City, Utah.Gail was cremated at Lindquist Mortuary, and in accordance with her wishes, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your local animal shelter in her name.She will be remembered for her intelligence, her kindness, and the deep love she shared with her family, friends, and colleagues.
