Esther Lorraine Kent

1924 – 2016

We lost our dear, sweet Aunt Esther after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.  She was born in Wilson, Ok on June 14, 1924 to Emma Louise Hesse and Harry Kent.  She was one of five children; two older brothers, Ted and Ned, her twin brother Harry (Buzzy) and a younger sister Emmy Lou. Her father died when she was only three and her widowed mother moved all five children to Utah where she raised her family on Wilson Lane.

After graduating from Weber High School she went to work at Hill Field repairing engines. As soon as she turned 20 she enlisted in the Army Air Corp where she performed aircraft preflight inspection on aircraft prior to transport overseas.  At the end of World War II she returned to civilian life only to be recalled to the newly formed Air Force for the Korean War.  During her military service she was stationed in California, Arizona, New York and the Pentagon in Washington DC.  She loved to fly and had completed her first solo flight before she was recalled into the Air Force. Many times while stationed in upstate New York she would catch military flights going to New York and Washington DC to visit family and friends.

Following the Korean War she settled in California and completed her bachelor’s degree.  After a short time working interior design she went to work for Pacific Bell. She progressed from a clerk to a senior manager designing telephone networks until her retirement.  She spent much of her free time working at the Pasadena animal shelter and helping the homeless on the streets of Los Angeles.  Esther was everyone’s best friend from the moment you met her and would remain her friend for life. She was a warm and loving person.

Esther is survived by her older brothers, Ted and Ned Kent and her sister-in-law, Janice Kent. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Emmy Lou; her brother, Harry; and her long time companion, Helen Boris.  She leaves behind her numerous nephews and nieces and extended family that she so cherished. She will truly be missed.

We want to thank Chancellor Gardens especially Andrea and Carlie and Symbii Home Health Care and Hospice, Melissa, Dr Law, and Sherrady, for their loving care of our precious Aunt Esther.
