Elwood Peterson Powell was born to Edith Caroline Peterson and Marvin Schow Powell on August 23, 1943. He was the first of their seven children and grew up on a dairy farm north of Eden, Idaho. He moved to North Ogden at the beginning of his junior year in high school and graduated from Weber High in 1961. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in North Germany from 1962-1965. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Weber State University and law degrees from the University of Utah, JD, in 1969 and Georgetown, LLM, in 1971.
In August 26, 1966, he was married to Sandra Kay Peterson and they had five children, Brian, Hilary, Lynette, Steven, and Christopher. They have 16 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
He practiced law in Denver, Salt Lake City, and Ogden. He was still doing occasional legal work until just before he died. He was the first law clerk to Judge Frank Nebeker on the DC Court of Appeals. He served as a Utah Bar Examiner and President of the Weber County Bar Association.
The most important things to him were his family, his faith, and his country. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In addition to his mission to North Germany, he served with his wife as a teacher in the China Teachers Program in Guangzhou China in 2006-2007 and as a service missionary at Camp Lomond in Ogden Valley for seven years. His favorite calling was as a scoutmaster. He served for 35 years and helped over 60 boys earn their Eagle Scout award.
Shooting was his other passion. He chaired the Utah Shooting Sports Council for 10 years and helped lobby the Utah legislature concerning gun legislation. For 20 years he was president of the Utah State Rifle and Pistol Association. He was head coach of the U of U Pistol Team for 14 years, and he was President of the Weber Wildlife Federation for 8 years.
In 2020 he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Despite a valiant fight and the services of dedicated professionals, it finally claimed him on the evening of July 4, 2024.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 11 a.m. at the Burch Creek 1st Ward, 5161 S 1300 E, South Ogden, UT. Friends may visit with family on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd, and Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 at the church. Interment Ben Lomond Cemetery.
