Dr. Charles L. Pennington
OGDEN-Dr. Charles L. Pennington, 90, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2012. He was born 24 January 1922 and raised in SLC. After graduation from South High School in 1938, Charles attended Western Electrical College on a scholarship and obtained a first class radio-operator''s license.
He worked as a transmitter operator and newsman in AZ and NM. Dad returned to SLC in 1942 and enlisted in the Navy Air Cadet program. The day in 1944 he was commissioned an ensign in the Navy was the same day he married Mary Chapman of Santa Fe NM. Charles was assigned to the South Pacific where he piloted PB4Y patrols over the South China Sea. He was awarded five air medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war he worked part-time at the SLC radio station KDYL as a newsman and engineer. He started classes at the U of U in 1946, was accepted into medical school in 1949, received his doctorate degree in 1952, completed his internship in 1954 and completed residency in 1955 at the Dee Hospital in Ogden, UT.
Dr. Pennington started his General Practice in 1955 in Roy, UT. He kept his private practice until 1966 when he became a founding member of the first full time Emergency Medicine contract group in the intermountain area. Mary passed away in 1976. In 1978, Charles married Dolores S. Petershesky. He continued to work at the McKay Dee Hospital Emergency Room until his retirement in 1983. Chick and Dodie''s life together was then filled with travel and good friends, especially The Wild Bunch (friends for more than 60 years). They visited China, Mexico, Africa, Scotland, Alaska, Norway, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand and more. There were plenty of fishing trips and annual skiing trips to Aspen, CO. Dodie passed away in 2008. Charles lived a wonderful and amazing life and has been blessed with two long and loving marriages.
He was preceded in death by his first son, John Charles in 1968.
He is survived by his children George (Sidney) of Moreno Valley, CA; Julie (Charles) Wittenbraker of Las Vegas, NV; Peggy Harrison of Roy, UT; Mark (Joni) of Hooper, UT; Michelle (Barry) Verhaal, Syracuse UT; stepdaughter Carol (Bill) Hill of Seattle, WA; 14 grandchildren and 15+ great grandchildren.
The family is grateful to the staff at Mountain Ridge Assisted Living and to Hospice of Utah, especially Brett Tassone, for the personal and tender care they provided during his last days.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday March 7, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Family will meet with friends on Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment, Lindquist''s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd. In lieu of flowers, please make a generous contribution to your favorite charity.
