Dr Robert L Marquardt

Dr. Robert L. Marquardt passed away at his home in Ogden, Utah on January 14, 2012 after a valiant 4 year fight with bone cancer. Born December 25, 1925 in Dayton Ohio, Bob was the youngest child of Willard H. and Enid Gilbert Marquardt.

Bob''s siblings, all of whom predeceased him, were Elizabeth L. (Betty) Brundige, Willard H. (Bill) Marquardt, David G. Marquardt and Richard F. Marquardt. Bob is survived by Annette Marquardt, his wife of 23 years.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Jane (Tami) Marquardt of Salt Lake City, his son, Robert Scott Marquardt of Salt Lake City, 3 grandsons: David W. Marquardt, Daniel B. Marquardt and Michael J. Marquardt, and 5 step-grandchilren: Jacee Ballard, Judd Erickson, Jackie Blanchard, Jim Blanchard and John Blanchard. Finally, Bob leaves behind a large group of nieces and nephews and friends whom he loved deeply and enjoyed immensely. Bob served in World War II as a midshipman for the U.S. Merchant Marine and U.S. Navy. After the end of the war, Bob attended Denison University and attained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1950. He later attained an MBA and a PhD (in 1982) in Business Management.

At age 10, right after his father died, Bob discovered his talent and passion for working. As a child he started a number of neighborhood businesses and throughout his career he often held two jobs at a time. He moved to Ogden in 1960 to begin work as the Director of Marketing at Thiokol Chemical Corporation. He eventually became a Group Vice President at Thiokol, helped create an Education Division and was instrumental in getting Thiokol into the business of operating Job Corps Centers for the Dept. of Labor. In 1980, Bob was the prime force behind acquiring the education and training division from Thiokol and forming Management & Training Corporation. MTC currently employs over 9,200 people, is the largest operator of Job Corps Centers in the country and is the third largest operator of private correctional facilities. Bob never lost his passion for education, rehabilitation and giving people a second chance. Bob was very proud of his MTC family and continued to serve as Chairman Emeritus of MTC until the time of his death.

Bob was a huge believer in the importance of contributing to one''s community. Through his efforts, many projects came to life: Beus Pond Nature Park, Ogden River Parkway, MTC Park, George S. Eccles Dinosaur Park, scholarships for business students at Weber State University, football stadium enhancements and athletic scholarships for Weber State, and the Enid Marquardt Art Contest at the Aullwood Audubon Center & Farm in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Bob would be the first to say that none of his community work would have come to fruition without the countless volunteer hours and financial contributions made by the many friends and colleagues who helped him and Annette achieve these dreams.

Bob''s hobbies included displays of Christmas lights, landscaping, deep sea fishing, writing music and poetry, drawing and photography, and long distance running (he set the downhill course record for people over 50 in the Bair-Gutsman race). He loved the challenge of a new book, a new hobby, a new business a€" he basically couldn''t wait to excel at every new subject he discovered.

The family wishes to thank Doctors Rob Mohr and Adam Craner, CNAs, and the staff of Hearts for Hospice for the outstanding and compassionate care they provided Bob. In addition, the family thanks Sachiko Obayashi, Larry Kimball and Bob Voorhees for their many years of friendship and amazing support.

Donations may be made in Bob''s honor to the Ogden Dinosaur Park & Museum Foundation, 1544 East Park Blvd, Ogden, Utah 84401. The family will meet friends on Friday, January 20th from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ogden Dinosaur Park Museum building, 1544 East Park Blvd., Ogden, Utah. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January, 21st at 2 p.m. in the Weber State Dee Events Center, 4450 Harrison Blvd., Ogden, Utah. There will be a reception immediately following the service at the Dee Events Center.
