A Tribute to a Life Well Lived

With much love we commemorate the life, legacy, and enduring spirit of Dorthy Thayne Bodily. Dorthy passed away peacefully at age 95 in her home in Farr West, Utah on Saturday morning August 30, 2025. We believe she is now reunited with her husband, Dean “H” Bodily, and her son, Dean Allen Bodily.

Born on December 8, 1929, to Nephi Whork and Orissa Allred Thayne in Farmington, New Mexico. Dorthy was the youngest daughter of 16 children, who learned a strong work ethic but still enjoyed life and remained a close-knit family throughout the years.

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and proud of her heritage and a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She lived in New Mexico and later moved with her family to Layton, Utah where she graduated from Davis High School in Kaysville.

She met Dean at a church dance, and they later married on April 23, 1947. They lived for a time in Layton and Clearfield. The family later moved to Citrus Heights, California, where Dorthy worked for Aerojet-General Corporation. They soon returned to their Utah roots and moved to Sunset where they continued to raise their family. Dorthy continued her civil service career first with the Internal Revenue Service and later at Hill Air Force Base where she was a procurement specialist until she retired.

As a family they had a variety of interests, they enjoyed camping, traveling, fishing, and boating. They enjoyed playing cards and board games with family and friends. In her church callings she especially enjoyed her time as Primary Teacher, Young Womens Secretary, and a Visiting Teacher for the Relief Society. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crocheting. Dorthy’s creativity and talents live on through her children, and her influence can be seen in her grandchildren’s lives. Her adventurous and fun-loving spirit will be missed.

Dorthy is survived by her children, James Earl (Patricia) Bodily, Janice N (Bob) Young, David Lynn (Jann) Bodily, Kenneth Ray (Penny) Bodily; and stepson, Dennis Lynn Bodily Schoenhardt; her one brother, Darrel Thayne. At the time of her passing, she has 13 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren and innumerable extended family. She believed in celebrating life's milestones—big and small—and delighted in creating traditions that would bind the generations together.

Although Dorthy’s physical presence is now gone from our lives, her spirit endures. As a family we continue to cherish the stories shared by friends, passed down through generations, and reflections of the past that are a true measure of a life well-lived.

For those that wish to pay their respects, Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Syracuse City Cemetery, next to her husband.
