Darrell George Smith

Darrell George Smith, our family patriarch, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in his home on Wednesday, February 11th, 2026.

Darrell was born August 23, 1941 in Armstead, Montana and was raised in Tremonton, Utah. Darrell was the oldest of six children born to George Sterling Smith (deceased) and Theda Chugg (deceased). Darrell was preceded in death by his loving wife, Carole Dawn, his sisters Carol Johnson and Linda Robinson, and his brother Gary Smith. He is survived by his sister Sandra Thompson and his brother Dee Smith.

Darrell’s children include Jeffrey, Debra, Susan, Curtis, Christine, Cari, Michael, and Greg. Darrell’s 27 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren have been a source of great joy and happiness for him.

Darrell attended Bear River High School in Tremonton, Utah where he served as seminary president and played on the tennis team. During his youth, Darrell achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and, later, applied his love of Scouting as a leader to bless the lives of many young men over the course of his life. Darrell served a mission in 1961 for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern Atlantic States mission.

Darrell attended college at Utah State University and Brigham Young University. He pursued his doctor of dentistry and specialized in orthodontics at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. Darrell started his orthodontic practice in Roy in 1972 and straightened smiles in Weber county, Laketown and Tremonton, Utah for over 35 years. As a devoted orthodontist, he transformed thousands of lives with his skilled hands, thoughtful care, and the gift of beautiful, confident smiles. Darrell was a member of the American Association of Orthodontists; he was a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics; and Darrell was past president of the Utah Association of Orthodontists and the Weber District Dental Society.

On December 27, 1963 Darrell married Carole Dawn Zollinger for time and all eternity in the Logan temple. “DG” and “Zollie” loved each other dearly. They built a family legacy, raising eight children to be faithful warriors for truth, to be humble servants of Christ, and to set a powerful example of how to show love for one’s neighbor.

Darrell loved fly fishing, long-line trolling, shooting guns, motorcycles and ATV’s, tennis, golf and other activities where he could enjoy special time with his bride, his children, and his family and friends. Darrell not only mastered the accordion, but he also taught lessons. He also loved playing the ukulele and guitar, where he could strum hits from his favorite bands like the Kingston Trio, the Lettermen, and Peter, Paul, and Mary. He loved to sing and was a member of the choir, his voice carrying warmth, faith, and heartfelt joy to all who heard it.

He had a deep love for researching and understanding religion. For him, learning was an act of reverence, and questions were invitations to grow. Reading and continuous learning were woven into who he was. His library stood as a reflection of his curiosity, thoughtful faith, and lifelong pursuit of truth.

Bear Lake was Darrell and Carole Dawn’s paradise. In Laketown, they built a lifetime of dreams, memories, and legacy. It was there that they served faithfully in the Laketown Ward, gathered generations for cherished family reunions, and created traditions that will live on for years to come. There was something sacred about this special place when the sun would slowly sink behind the mountains, and the lake would grow still. In those quiet moments, surrounded by the people they loved most, Bear Lake felt like the fulfillment of a dream. It was the heart of their story and where memories were sealed.

Many were blessed by Darrell’s love, his gentle heart, and his unwavering compassion for all, and we will honor his life and legacy forever.

The family wishes to express deep appreciation to Stormy, Laura, Olivia, Nevaeh, Dr. Seth Lewis, and all of the caretakers who helped and comforted Dad as he prepared to pass.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at 11 a.m. at the Tri-Oaks Ward Chapel, 2375 E. 3225 N., Layton, Utah. Family and friends may visit Monday, February 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, February 17 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the chapel prior to the service.

Interment will be held at the Smithfield Cemetery, 300 E. Center St., Smithfield, Utah.
