Curtis William Youngman

October 13, 1949 — August 26, 2023

Layton

Our beloved Husband, Father, Papa, Teacher, Professor, and Friend returned home to his Heavenly Father, Saturday August 26, 2023. He finished his life exactly as he hoped: surrounded by family in his home.

Curtis was born October 13, 1949 in Ogden, Utah, the first of two children of George William and Dora Hess Youngman. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1967 and attended Weber State College before serving a two-year mission in New Zealand, where he served the greatest people in the world making countless life-long friends. Upon returning from his mission, he met and married his sweetheart Karen Parker, and they began their happily ever after in Logan, Utah. Curtis graduated from Weber State College and Utah State University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in education.

Curtis was a professor at Salt Lake Community College for 37 years. He loved teaching and connecting with students and faculty alike. He cared for everyone around him and, whether you were the president or a janitor, you knew he cared for you. Curtis was an Advisor of the collegiate DECA program both at SLCC and for the state of Utah. He had a knack for helping his students discover their potential. Through the many years he received several awards including when he earned the vocational teacher of the year award in 1995.

Curtis found joy serving in many callings within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His testimony of Jesus Christ led every decision he and his wife made as they brought up their family in righteousness. His proudest moments as a father were the many times, he was together with his wife and five kids in the temple. Curtis and Karen were blessed later in life serving a mission from their home teaching students in Africa.

Big Curt’s personality and loving compassion was infectious to all who met him. Every handshake turned to a hug, every “nice to meet you” turned to jovial laughter. His light brightened every room he entered; his compassionate spirit calmed every troubled heart. His passions included gardening, serving others, and teaching.

While he loved teaching, his greatest joy came from his family. He was a proud, devoted husband and father and Papa. He cherished every moment he spent with his wife, kids and grandkids going to many games, birthday breakfasts, or simply sitting in the family room watching his family of 29 laugh and love together. He leaves a legacy of love that will continue through all who knew him.

The family would like to give special thanks to Aspen Ridge Home Health and Hospice for the tender care they gave these last few months. Especially Jeanette, Ashlee, and Marley who were so kind each day, treating Curtis as if he was theirs.

Curtis is survived by his beautiful wife Karen and five children: Stacie Martin of Layton, Matthew (Logan) Youngman of Clearfield, Jared Youngman of Layton, Zealand (Mandie) Youngman of West Point, and Melissa (Chris) Waters of West Point; his greatest treasure his 18 grandkids: Maddux (Seth), Reagan, Isabella, Alexia, Brinley, Azia, Abigail, Sienna, Cooper, Casen, Ashlinn, Christian, Parker, Lincoln, Kyran, Jaxson, Reese, Mya; and his sister Ann (Larry) Weir of Washington Terrace.
