Listen to Obituary

Colleen Foxley Nelson, our much-cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 97 on January 27, 2026, surrounded by her children. Born August 26, 1928, in Kaysville, Utah to Leo H. and Artell Love Foxley, Colleen spent her entire life in the Kaysville and Layton area, a place she loved deeply and where her roots ran as strong and enduring as the family she built.

It was in that familiar community that she met the love of her life, W. Dennis Nelson, while working as a cashier at Hill Air Force Base. After a year of courtship filled with shared dreams and laughter, they married on April 11, 1947, and were later sealed for time and eternity on May 11, 1983, in the Ogden Utah Temple. Their marriage was a testament to an enduring partnership, one that welcomed five beloved children and a growing legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom they adored beyond measure.

Colleen's greatest pride and joy was her family. She attended every graduation, game, concert, and milestone she could, arriving with open arms and a heart full of pride. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren knew they were seen, loved, and celebrated—no matter the distance or circumstance. She had an extraordinary memory, treasuring the stories, lessons, and experiences of her long life, which she generously shared to uplift and guide those around her.

A woman of profound faith in Jesus Christ, Colleen emulated the Savior's example in her daily life. Raised by her parents with an incredible work ethic, honesty, and humility, she never sought the spotlight. Instead, she quietly eased burdens, brought light to dark moments, and made everyone who crossed her path feel valued and wanted—even in the briefest encounters. She served faithfully in numerous Church callings throughout her life, always giving her best with diligence and grace. Stubborn in the most beautiful way, she preferred to serve others rather than ever feel like a burden herself. One of her favorite ways to express love was crocheting baby blankets to gift to those in need—a tangible reminder of her caring heart. She truly embodied the truth that "It is not how many years we live, but what we do with them. It is not what we receive, but what we give to others."

Even through life's inevitable trials, Colleen maintained an unbreakable faith and a delightful sense of humor that brightened every room. Beyond her devotion to the Gospel, she found pure delight in gardening. Blessed with a remarkable green thumb, she coaxed vibrant crops and flowers of every hue from her garden, tending to them with the same tender care she gave her family. Until recently, she could be found outside, trimming roses or weeding with purpose and joy. When indoors, she loved a peaceful nap accompanied by the weather forecast or a rerun of NCIS—small, contented moments that reflected her appreciation for life's simple rhythms.

Preceded in death by her companion Dennis, sons-in-law David Garrett and Craig Thatcher, and grandson Parker Garrett. Colleen is survived by her beloved children: Patricia Garrett, Connie Thatcher, LeeAnn Christensen (John), Scott Nelson (Melissa), and Diane Hobson (Blake); 24 grandchildren; and 70 great-grandchildren—with the joyful promise of more to come. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue to flourish in the lives she touched so deeply.

With much love, Colleen bids goodbye to so many loved ones and friends who made this mortal journey a joyous one. With her love, compassion, and wisdom, she taught us the value of hard work, honesty, courage, and family. She was the bond that helped keep our family close throughout the years. Her legacy will live on through everything we learned from her. Colleen, we will miss you dearly. May you rejoice in the arms of our Savior and loved ones. Until we meet again.
