Dr. Cloyd D. Van Hook

Dr. Cloyd D. Van Hook, 93, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours at his home on Thursday, January 26, 2012, five days short of his 94th birthday. He was born to Joseph Orlando and Anna Mae Wagers Van Hook on January 31, 1918 in Berea, Kentucky.

Cloyd graduated from Mississippi Southern in 1940 and Louisiana State Medical School in 1943. In 1944, he entered the Naval Hospital at Pensacola, Florida for an internship. From 1944 to 1946, he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Yokes as a Medical Officer and at the U.S. Marine Air Base Ewa in Oahu, Hawaii. He was discharged from the Navy in June of 1946. After being discharged, he opened a practice in Gibsland, Louisana from 1946 to 1947. He moved to Ogden, Utah where he opened a general practice from 1947 to 1951. Cloyd moved his family to Kentucky where he did his residency for Neurological Surgery at University of Louisville Hospital from 1951 to 1955. He moved back to Ogden and opened a Neurological Surgery practice from 1955 until his retirement in 1988. Cloyd practiced at the Ogden Clinic from the time it opened until his retirement.

He married Nathalie Fernandez in 1944. One son joined this union. They were later divorced. He married Betty Ora Monroe in 1949. Three more children joined the family. She passed away in 1973. Cloyd married Connie Garver on June 6, 1974. They have been able to share many wonderful years together.

Cloyd was a member of the Certified Board of Neurological Surgery since 1956; Weber County Medical Society; Utah State Medical Society; American Medical Association, Association of American Neurological Surgeons, "Harvey Cushing Society"; Rocky Mountain Neurosurgical Society, where he served as immediate Vice President; former Vice President of the Utah Neurosurgical Society; and former Chief of Surgery Department at St. Benedict''s Hospital.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church. He enjoyed any opportunity he had to golf especially at the Ogden Golf and Country Club.

Cloyd is survived by his wife, Connie; sons, Cloyd F. (Carmela), River Ridge, LA; and James D. (Stacy), Ogden; daughters, Vicky (Charles) Young, Winnetka, IL; and Marilyn Van Hook, Wood Village, OR; 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother; wife, Betty; and granddaughter, Emily.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd., where military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard. Services entrusted to Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Rocky Mountain Hospice, Utah Cancer Society or the First Baptist Church, Ogden.
