Chester T Spangler

Chester T. Spangler, 86, passed away at his home in West Point on February 6, 2024. He was born in Puxico, Missouri on June 16, 1937, the third of six children. His family moved to Myrtle Creek, Oregon, where he lived until his graduation from Roseburg High School. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served for the next 10 years.

 

He married Karen Mikkelsen on September 5, 1959. He was a graduate of the University of Utah, Officers’ Candidate School, and Mine Warfare School. He served as an officer on the USS Gannet, a minesweeper stationed in Sasebo, Japan. His fleet of minesweepers kept the Gulf of Tonkin free of enemy mines during the Vietnam War. After leaving the Navy, he was employed by the IRS, where he worked until his retirement.

 

Chester enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, gardening, and anything to do with the outdoors. He also enjoyed working on the computer and watching his favorite teams on TV.

 

Chester is survived by his wife, Karen; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Talene Spangler; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Stephen MaryField; two granddaughters, Elena (Lanie) and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Spangler; two nieces and three nephews.
